Game Report – Boys Basketball: SWG @ Ragsdale

The Cowboys opening road trip continued as they headed the short trip over to Jamestown to take on the Tigers of Ragsdale. This heated rivalry has been one sided as Southwest has dominated this match up, winning 14 in a row since January of 2012. These neighboring rivals have had some heated battles in front of standing room only crowds. The student sections for both sides have always been animated and very loud. The Tigers were looking to build on their season opening win over Western Guilford and the Cowboys were also looking to stay perfect on the young season.

Tonight’s atmosphere was no different. Playing in front of a large and loudly raucous crowd, the Cowboys got on the board early. The Tigers used the home energy to spurt a 4-0 run to take a brief 4-2 lead. 12 seconds later the Cowboys tied it up, took the lead, then a thunderous put back dunk make it 8-4. Following a made Ragsdale free throw, The Cowboys went 3 more straight trips with strong dunks to push it out to 14-5. But the home squad kept fighting and clawing to make it 14-9. From there the Tigers kept the momentum and rolled all the way to cut it down to a one possession game as the frame ended at 20-18.

Southwest had a bad first possession and turned it over to allow the Tigers to tie the game up at 20. The pace slowed down and got real physical, and the Cowboys slowly regained the lead, and the Tigers slowly kept it at bay. The frame ended with another run by the Tigers cut it to 35-28 going into the break.

The third frame was the difference in the game as the defensive pressure of the Cowboys really frazzled the Tigers. A 10-0 run to start the frame pushed it out to 45-28. A made free throw finally put Ragsdale on the board at the 4:27 mark. But the momentum was still in favor of the Cowboys as the frame ended at 58-38.

The final stanza was ugly and physical as the foul calls kept mounting. Despite the charity stripe parade, the Cowboys did enough to keep the game under raps as it finally closed at 77-62.

The Tigers were led by Devan Boykin’s 15 points. The Cowboys were paced by Keyshaun Langley with (21, 8 Asts, 5 Rebs, 2 Stls), Christian Martin with (19, 9 Rebs), and Joel Pettiford with (11, 5 Rebs).
