Recap of the NCHSAA Board of Directors 2018 Fall Meetings:McMichael and Morehead granted reclassification/Southwestern Randolph denied

The NCHSAA Board of Directors Winter Meeting concluded this morning in Chapel Hill. The Board had a very productive meeting and completed a very comprehensive agenda during the two-and-a-half day meeting. Topics addressed included:

– Classification appeals, adjustments and conference placement requests from member schools as stipulated for the midpoint of each four- year alignment cycle. A full listing of those decisions is provided below in this email.
– Approving an increase in varsity officiating fees for officials in football and basketball, bringing the NCHSAA into better alignment with other state associations in the southeast and aiding in our efforts to recruit and retain officials. They also made an adjustment to the playoff officiating fees beginning in the third round when neutral crews are assigned in an effort to compensate officials for the extra distance traveled for these contests. Effective for the 2019-2020 school year.
– Mandated that baseball and softball coaches in the coaching box on the field must be wearing a helmet or hard skull cap-style helmet during play for safety. Effective immediately.
– Adjusted the tournament regulation and weekly limitation for volleyball, creating more clarity as to what is allowed with regard to tournament play.
– Approved a one-year trial for an NCHSAA Women’s Wrestling Invitational in conjunction with NC Wrestling Coaches Association and the NC Chapter of USA Wrestling.
– Revised the NCHSAA Investment Policy Statement, as advised by NCHSAA Investment Management Groups, to allow more flexibility for those managing NCHSAA investments as they face increasing market volatility.
– Heard reports from Board Subcommittees tasked with examining and crafting a policy for Home School and Transgender Participation. The Board has tasked the staff with further formatting draft policies and seeking feedback from City/County ADs and selected membership groups.

  1. Making the Mid State 3A a split conference still does no good for either school in conference play and for total record overall. They should have moved them to a true 2A conference.
