Elon Track and Field Opens Season at JDL College Kickoff Classic

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The 2018-19 indoor season opened for the Elon University women’s track and field team on Saturday, Dec. 1, at the JDL College Kickoff Classic inside the JDL Fast Track Complex.

RESULTS

“Today was a good day, but we still have some work to do in some areas,” said Elon director of track and field and cross country Mark Elliston. “We had some athletes do really well in their events, but we also have to continue to focus and work on a number of things as we move forward into the break.”

The Phoenix had two athletes finish in the top-10 of the shot put in junior Skylar Barthelmes and freshman Kristine Strazdite. Barthelmes was fourth overall with a throw of 41′ 10.5″ (12.76m) while Strazdite was eighth with her throw of 40′ 1.25″ (12.22m). Charlotte Bradsher just missed out on making the top-10 with her heave of 37′ 8″ (11.48m) and was 11th overall.

Barthelmes continued her strong day with a top-five finish in the weight throw. The Dartmouth, Mass., native had a toss of 50′ 6″ (15.39m) and was fifth in the event. Bradsher was eighth overall with a throw of 47′ 10.50″ (14.59m).

Katie Arbogast was third in the 400-meters for the Phoenix with her time of 58.23. In the 200-meters, Lauren Brzozowski also earned a third-place standing with her time of 25.73 while freshman Jordan Haywood was sixth in the race with her time of 25.96. Haywood also clocked a preliminary time of 7.89 in the 60-meters, almost sneaking into the program’s too-five performance list.

In the high jump, Moira O’Malley was sixth overall as the sophomore cleared the bar at 5′ 3″ (1.60m). Rookie Blythe Hehmeyer broke into the program’s top-five performance list in the pole vault after she cleared the bar with her mark of 10′ 6″ (3.20m), good for fourth overall.

Melody Burke was the top finisher for the Phoenix in the triple jump with her leap of 35′ 3.75″ (10.76m) good for eighth overall. Elyse King was ninth at her mark of 34′ 8.25″ (10.57m) while Hehmeyer closed out the top-10 with her jump of 34′ 5.50″ (10.50m).
