Maupin’s Double-Double Powers Elon WBB Over Hampton, 77-62

HAMPTON, Va. – Sophomore Emily Maupin’s first double-double of the season helped the Elon University women’s basketball team to 77-62 victory on the road at Hampton on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 2, inside the Hampton University Convocation Center.

The Phoenix improved to 3-4 on the season and has won two of its past three games in a five-day stretch. The Lady Pirates fell to 3-2 on the young season.

Maupin posted career-highs in the contest as she tied for the team-lead with 21 points while adding 15 rebounds for the Phoenix. The Charlottesville, Va., native shot 9-of-15 from the field and had seven offensive boards. Fellow sophomore Ariel Colón also had a career-high with 21 points to tie Maupin for game-high honors while going 10-of-12 from the free throw line.

Lexi Mercer also joined Maupin and Colón in double figures with 12 points as the Phoenix shot 25-of-57 (.439) overall in the game and was 5-of-11 from three. Elon also made the most of its trips to the free throw line, going 22-of-27 overall. The maroon and gold dominated on the boards with 41 rebounds, including 14 on the offensive end, compared to 30 total for Hampton.

The Lady Pirates were led by Ashley Bates, who posted a team-best 17 points. Kaylah Lupoe (15 points) and Lauren VanArsdale (13 points) joined Bates as double-digit scorers for Hampton. Overall, Hampton shot 22-of-56 (39.3) from the floor and was 4-of-14 (.286) from three while going 14-of-19 from the charity stripe.

“We always talk about defense and rebounding,” said Phoenix head coach Charlotte Smith. “We make a commitment to those two things, defense and rebounding, and we give ourselves a chance to be successful.”

The Rundown
Elon got off to a fast start, opening the game with a 10-0 advantage. Colón scored the first basket of the game on a jumper in transition followed by back-to-back three-pointers from herself and Mercer. Anna Popovic extended the Phoenix’s lead to 10-0 on a layup, but Hampton went on a 12-2 run to tie the contest at 12-all. The Lady Pirates would eventually take the lead at 15-14 at the 3:07 mark on a pair of free throws. The quarter would end with Hampton taking a 20-19 advantage at the end of the period.

Hampton started the second quarter on a 6-0 run to force the Phoenix to call a timeout. The Lady Pirates kept the run going to extend their lead to 10, 31-21, at the 6:40 mark in the quarter. An 8-2 run by the Phoenix brought its deficit within four, 33-29, after a pair of Colón free throws at the 4:24 mark. Elon made it a two-point game on a Maupin offensive putback at the 2:13 mark and eventually went into the locker down three, 38-35.

The Phoenix shot 13-of-32 in the opening half (.406), but hit 3-of-6 from three. Elon also went 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Hampton was 13-of-30 in the first half (.433) and was 9-of-12 from the charity stripe.

Elon worked the take the lead to start the third quarter. Maupin scored the first six points of the period for the Phoenix, including a layup that gave the maroon and gold a 41-38 lead with 8:50 on the clock. The Phoenix took a 46-43 as Hampton took a timeout with 5:56 left in the quarter, but a couple of turnovers aided the Lady Pirates to retake the lead, 47-46. From that point, Elon was sent to the free throw line on nearly every possession as the Phoenix capitalized going 11-of-14 in the period before going to the fourth with a 55-51 lead.

An 11-5 run to start the fourth helped the Phoenix take a 10-point lead and eventually pull away in the contest. The trio of Maupin, Colón and Mercer helped lead the charge as the Phoenix’s lead did not get any lower than seven points in the period as Elon cruised to the 77-62 victory.
