+++++Other highlights for Eastern Guilford….EG out-scored Smith, 21-6 in the Third Quarter….EG took a 40-point lead with 1:58 left in the Third Quarter and the running clock continued to run the rest of the ball game…

+++++++++++Smith Coach McCarter stepped down on Monday and Ben L. Smith athletic director Rod McCollough told me tonight that Coach McCarter felt like it was time to step aside….It was combination of things and the losing can wear any coach down, but what really hit Coach McCarter and heavily affected her decision was the fact that she was coaching a girls basketball team and she was a one-person staff….NO assistants and NO help in sight….The Smith girls team is way down this year and they re-build, but first they will have to re-load…The basketball job reached a point where it was just too much on Coach McCarter, but she will remain on board the Smith High School staff, in a teaching capacity….The new coach for the Smith girls is Michael Patterson and for now he is a one-man staff, but word is they are trying to find him some assistants and that help might be on the way …..

  • Coaching Situations said,

Guilford County Schools needs to do a better job especially on the girls side in middle and high school getting coaches that actually can coach or want to coach. This having to teach rule is old. You go to other counties and states and yes it is a convenience to have a coach on staff however it is damaging to these kids when the players and/or the teams are not getting better. Coaches are getting checks at the expense of players not improving. I know it is not every school but it is a sad situation.

  • Andy Durham said,

Did anybody see that Grimsley boys score from the game at West Forsyth?

I thought the Grimsley Voice would be in here with that one, but he might be letting down on his guard….He has served this community for many years…

We will search it out and hope to have that score up here soon….

  • Andy Durham said,

Got it where Grimsley’s boys won that game at West, 56-48…That’s a solid win for the Grimsley boys basketball program, especially with it coming on the road…

And I heard the big freshman Travis Shaw was on the court for Grimsley and that is a plus too….

  • Local Reporter said,

Andy, I have to say Northeast Guilford is 0-3 but they have to be pleased with the way Jaydon Hall and Anthony Hairston have started the season also standouts on the football team, I think these 2 are a force to be reckoned with.

  • Eagles said,

    @ Coaching Situations
Amen amen and AMEN. Smith has some great pass players that care about the school that would come in and fix these programs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Baller Mom said,

Can we get some game breakdowns for the Grimsley MBB? They have some nice talent out there with impressive games, even in the loses. I look for those details and they are never posted. Who would be responsible for delivering that? I’m a parent.

  • Andy Durham said,

For Grimsley scores, somebody over at the school is going to have to start sending those game details, or we may have to go over there to a few games and get them ourselves….

  • Not for the money said,

The idea of a faculty member coaching basketball to collect a check is laughable. In Guilford County the average pay for a varsity basketball head coach is around 3000-3500. That is for coaching November they the end of February. There is no pay for preseason workouts and the summer practices and jamborees that coaches take their players to every summer.
In high school a teacher arrives at school around 7:30-8:00. On the days they have early practice it usually ends around 6. So you get home about 6:30. On late practice days you get home around 8.
For an away game you could get home anything between 9 and 11 depending on where the game is.
Any teacher that is in it to collect a “check” is probably making about 50 cents an hour.

  • Baller Mom said,

Thank you. I’ll talk to the coach but yes i’d love to read the reports. Last year they were reported, none this year.

  • Thomas Griffis said,

I will start sending them to you as well Andy. I have been emailing the box score. I am not sure why they have not been posted.

  • Andy Durham said,

Thank-you Coach Griffis…You are the man, “The Ice Man”, to be exact…..
