HPU MSOC: Fenwick Earns All-American Honors

IGH POINT, N.C. – Retiring as High Point University men’s soccer’s most decorated player to date, defender Johnny Fenwick was named an NCAA Second Team All-American by United Soccer Coaches this Thursday. Fenwick is just the second Panther to earn an All-American distinction, and the first to claim higher than Third-Team honors.

“We are extremely proud of Johnny garnering this honor,” said Head Men’s Soccer Coach EJ O’Keeffe. “To be named an All-American is a tremendous achievement and no one is more deserving. He is a top player, and moreover a top young man. His character and mentality are impeccable. The standards he has set for the returning players and our program have changed the dynamic of HPU Soccer.”

Helping the Panthers to their first ever appearance in the NCAA Championship tournament, Fenwick captained the most successful HPU squad in Division I history in 2018, winning a second straight Big South regular season title, setting a program record in regular season win percentage (.844) and leading his side to as high as 12th in the national weekly polls.

“…It is a fantastic achievement, but my individual awards do not compare to the team accomplishments over the past two years, winning back-to-back Big South Championships and making an NCAA tournament appearance,” said Fenwick. “Everyone involved has worked so hard to leave the program in a better place than we found it, and because of that the future looks very promising for HPU men’s soccer.”

Fenwick and his fellow seniors finish their time at High Point as the only team to reach the NCAA tournament along with tying the most Big South wins of any senior class (22). The Englishman’s All-American honor is the last of many he’s earned over the course of his career, finishing his time at High Point with more hardware than any player in the Panthers’ Division I history.

Here’s a look at all of Johnny Fenwick’s on-field accomplishments, dating back to his freshman year at High Point (2015):

2018 United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-American
2018 NCAA Championship Tournament Appearance
2x Big South Regular Season Champion
2018 Big South Defensive Player of the Year
2x United Soccer Coaches All-Region Selection (2017, 2018)
4x Big South All-Conference Selection (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018)
3x NCCSIA All-State Selection (2015, 2017, 2018)
2x Big South All-Tournament Selection (2017, 2018)
2015 Big South All-Freshman Selection

Fenwick is one of just seven defenders in all of Division I soccer to make the first two All-American lists in 2018, with four of those other six selections coming from the ACC, Big 10 or PAC 12. No other players from the Big South were selected outside of Fenwick, as he is just the 24th player in conference history to receive the honor and the fifth Big South defender to earn All-American nods.
