Women’s College Basketball Final: Guilford 83, Bridgewater (Va.) 80

BRIDGEWATER, Va. — Miracle Walters scored a career and game-best 28 points–and had a game-sealing steal–as Guilford College won at Bridgewater College, 83-80, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest on Saturday afternoon. Walters, a junior, was 12-of-14 from the field and made all four of her free throw attempts for Quakers.

The win was the fourth straight for Guilford, which improved to 6-3 and 4-1 in ODAC play. The Eagles dropped to 6-3 and 3-2 in league games.

The visitors trailed 40-33 at halftime. The Quakers, however, caught fire in the third quarter. Guilford tallied the first nine points of the stanza and outscored BC, 32-14, in the period.

In the final quarter, Julie Carini made a layup with 3:01 left to give her team a 79-72 lead. Bridgewater then went on an 8-0 run after Rebecca Harvey’s three-pointer with 57 seconds remaining to give the home team an 80-79 edge.

Lindsay Gauldin then made a layup with 33 seconds on the clock to give the Quakers a one-point lead. After a defensive stop, Calyn Davis made two free throws to push the Guilford advantage to 83-80. With eight seconds left the Eagles ran a final play, but Walters made a steal and dribbled away the final seconds for Guilford.

Gauldin added 21 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and three blocks for the Quakers. Briana Allen netted 12 points and Carini contributed 10 for the victorious visitors.

GC shot a season-high 56-percent (34-61) from the field in the contest. It was the Quakers second straight game shooting 50-percent or better. The Eagles shot 32-of-75 for 43-percent. Both teams
collected 38 rebounds.

Briana Moore recorded a team-best 23 points (9-16 shooting) and made five three-pointers for BC. Harvey added 17 points for the home club. Madison Baum dished 11 assists and Allie Coburn grabbed 13 boards. for the Eagles.

The Quakers host Meredith College on Friday, December 14. Game time is 6 p.m. at the Ragan-Brown Fieldhouse.
