HIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women’s basketball team defeated Norfolk State, 83-51, Saturday (Dec. 15) in the Millis Center.
The Panthers (5-4) shot a season-high 51.6 percent (33-64) from the field and 57.9 percent (11-19), while Norfolk State (4-6) made 34.0 percent (17-50) of its shots from the field and 28.6 percent (4-14) from behind the arc. HPU out-rebounded the Spartans 42-28.
“I was really proud of our overall effort,” head coach DeUnna Hendrix said. “I felt like we had many contributions from just about everyone. Even when they made a run in the second quarter and third quarter, we just stayed composed. It was the first time that I felt like we were steady throughout. We really just relied on what we knew, as far as the scout went, and trusted in each other.”
Senior Lindsey Edwards tied a career-high with 20 points and junior Camryn Brown had 18 points to lead the Panthers. Senior Emma Bockrath was tops on the team with six assists, while senior Shea Morgan was the leader on the boards with eight.
Norfolk State cut the lead to five, 46-41, with 3:42 left in the third quarter, but the Panthers responded with a 7-3 run to end the quarter to take a nine-point lead into the fourth. High Point ended the game on a 24-4 run, only allowing the Spartans to make two shots in the final eight minutes.
The Panthers jumped out to a 27-11 lead after the first quarter, but the Spartans fought back to cut the score to 37-28 going into halftime. HPU shot 70.0 percent 7-10) from behind the arc in the half, while holding the Spartans to 44.4 percent (4-9). The Panthers had 10 assists and five steals in the first half.
Junior Miya Bull added 13 points, five rebounds and two assists for HPU. Freshman Skyler Curran pitched in 11 points, four rebounds, two assists and a career-high two blocks.
The High Point out-scored Norfolk State in bench points (28-10), points in the paint (30-20), second chance points (15-7) and fast break points (10-0).
Raven Russell led Norfolk State with 17 points, while Dana Echols grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
