Women’s Basketball Final: Oglethorpe 47, Guilford 42

ATLANTA, Ga. – Freshman Lindsay Gauldin scored a game-high 19 points, but Guilford College lost at Oglethrope University, 47-42, on Sunday afternoon. Gauldin, the lone player to tally double figures in the game, also had 13 rebounds in collecting her sixth double-double of the season.

The Stormy Petrels, who had nine student-athletes score in the contest, improved to 8-1. The Quakers–who were held to a season-low for points–had their five-game winning streak snapped and fell to 7-4.

Oglethropre shot just 25.4 percent from the field, but held Guilford to just 31.4 percent and took 26 more shots than the Quakers. Guilford had shot better than 50-percent in each of the last three games.

The Petrels outrebounded Guilford 19-5 on the offensive glass and forced 22 turnovers while committing 11. Oglethorpe outscored their opponent 18-2 in second-chance points and 10-2 off the fast break. Guilford lost the battle of the boards, 41-33.

The halftime score was 24-24. Neither team led by more than five points during the course of the game, which featured 11 ties and six lead changes. With the game tied 40-40 and 5:45 left to play. The Quakers missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer with 40 seconds left. The Petrels put it away with nine seconds left when Nikkie Reed scored to make it 47-42.

Miracle Walters and Julie Carini each added eight points and seven rebounds for the visitors. Walters had a team-best three steals.

Savannah LeGate finished with seven points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Ransom contributed eight points, seven boards and three steals for OU.

The Quakers host Hollins University on January 2, 2019. Game time is 5 p.m. for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) contest.
