Sheetz Holiday Christmas Classic 1st Round – Boys Basketball: Southwest Guilford 80, Davidson Day 56

The nightcap of the opening day of the Sheetz Holiday Christmas Classic featured the hosting Cowboys against the Davidson Day Patriots. The visiting Patriots came into tonight’s contest winners of 6 in a row and an overall record of 9-1. Southwest came into tonight unbeaten on the young season and looked to keep that trend alive. Who’s winning streak would stay alive and who would have to regroup tomorrow?

Both teams came out a bit sloppy but finally the Cowboys got on the board first at 2-0. The Patriots responded with a 3 pointer to go up 3-2. This would set up the theme of the back and forth opening stanza that had 9 lead changes and a tie. Southwest went up for good in the frame at 10-9 with 4:07 to go. The margin peaked at 18-11, but another 3 pointer shortly before the buzzer closed the quarter with Southwest up 18-14.

The second quarter was more back and forth but this time it was the Patriots that slowly gained momentum. Davidson Day managed to tie it up at 22 apiece at the 6:12 mark. The Cowboys started to suffocate the Patriots and held them scoreless for over 4 minutes. By the time the dust settled it was a 15-0 run and it was 37-22. At the 1:43 mark the Patriots got a bucket to make it 37-24 with 1:43 to go. The rest of the half was back and forth and it closed at 44-29.

The second half started and the Cowboys started to impose their will and the margin go up to 56-36 midway through the frame. But the Patriots refused to fold and scrapped and clawed and cut the lead to 12. Southwest got a quick 4-0 spurt to close the frame at 60-44.

The Patriots regained the momentum with a 7-0 run and got it as close as 60-51 with 4:55 to go. Something must of clicked because from there the Cowboys really turned it up and outscored Davidson Day 20-5 to end up pulling away for a strong 80-56 win.

The Patriots were led by Will Coble at 15 points. Once again the Cowboys put 5 guys in double figures. Leading the way; Christian Martin with (21, 7 Rebs, 4 Stls), Joel Pettiford with (14, 3 Rebs, Stl, Ast), Kobe Langley with (13, 7 Asts, 4 Rebs, 2 Stls), Jay’Den Turner with (13, 6 Rebs, 4 Asts, 3 Stls, 2 Blks), and Keyshaun Langley with (10, 8 Asts, 2 Stls, 2 Blks).
