Day Two Observations at the 2018 HAECO Invitational Basketball Tournament, at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center:Plus Friday’s/Today’s Lineup

On Day Two of the HAECO Invitational Basketball Tournament, it might be duly noted, on the girl’s side, and in that NWG-GDS girls game, to me it was like the return of the “Kid Kargo Show”…Campbell Kargo sang the National Anthem before the game began, and then “Kid Kargo”/Reagan Kargo came out and scored 23 points for the Northwest Guilford girls, in their 48-33 victory over Greensboro Day…Je’Bria “Full Throttle” Fullwood led GDS with 12 points, but she did not have the support she needed from her fellow Bengals….Key to the game, NWG out-scored GDS, 15-1 in the second quarter…

The Ragsdale girls over Page saw the Ragsdale Tigers run out to a 44-20 halftime lead, and then the RHS Tigers came right out and out-scored Page, 16-3, in the third quarter….Ragsdale got 12 points each from Faith Price, Brooke Bradford and Nyah Stallings and Ragsdale saw 17 of their players get minutes in this game…Big rebounding game from Aijah Palmore, with 11 boards…

NWG-Ragsdale for the girls title on Friday will see RHS running and NWG playing some very deliberate basketball and NWG setting loads of screens for Kargo….Ragsdale has some quality depth, with Mariah Frazier, Diamond Monroe and Camryn Briley coming in off of the Tigers’ bench….RHS was 8-10 from the free throw line on Thursday and NWG hit 6-9 at the FT line…

The GDS boys have some strong MVP candidates in McCorkle, Taylor and the unsung Bengal has been Banks Handy…His name is banks and he doesn’t bank his shots, he swishes them…Banks Handy was 4-6 from three-point range for the GDS boys on Thursday….With his 12 points on Thursday, Handy now has 23 points in the tournament, and we will see how it goes for him on Friday, as Banks Handy, has become a major player in this HAECO Tournament….Nic Evtimov had 11 rebounds go along with his 12 points on Thursday, and Nic is coming of the pick and he is becoming a tough inside player to stop…With Evtimov, Taylor and Big Mike Fowler, GDS is very strong in the paint…Page had one man that was finding the target on Thursday, and that was Jaden Ellis, the Page Pirate sophomore had 26 points, on 10-23 shooting from the field, with Ellis going 4-9 from the 3-point arc….GDS over Page 78-48 and the Bengals will meet Northwest Guilford in the finals, as the Bengals go for their 8th straight title, in the HAECO Tournament…

The last team to beat the Greensboro Day School men was the Northwest Guilford Vikings, as #8 NWG upset #1 seed GDS, in Round One of the Tournament, back in 2010….GDS has not lost a HAECO Tournament game since 2010….That is some kind of streak…

The Northwest Guilford boys streaked past Smith on Thursday, 51-42 and for the NWG men, it was a big boost off of the NWG bench from Johnny Pagano, that really got the Vikes going…JP for three, yes siree, that is what the fans from NWG were saying about JP…Pagano with three three’s and a total of 13 pts., for NWG…Christian Hampton led the way for NWG, with 15 points and Dean Reiber added 10, plus NWG got outstanding minutes from Shaq Marsh….Strong stat back on Christian Hampton, he had 5 steals, to go with his 15 points…Smith was led by Jordan Williams with 13 points and the Golden Eagles only had one player reach double-digits and that was Williams…Williams added 11 rebounds to his game, while Juwelz Hargrove pulled down 10 boards for Smith..

The finals again on Friday show the GDS boys meeting NWG and the NWG girls facing Ragsdale….NWG girls going for their fifth consecutive tournament title…

In our consolation games, the Grimsley girls got past Northern Guilford, 65-61, and Grimsley got 26 big points from Isabel Cox, 15 from Kamri Sawyers and 12 from Farrah Dowtin…NG led by Stephanie Chandler with 19 points and Janelle Henderson with 12 points…

Devin Resper with 19 points and Ahmil Flowers with 15 paced the Grimsley boys, but it was not enough, as Ragsdale got 23 from Devan Boykin, 13 points and 14 rebounds from Bryant Wall, 12 points from Jaay Ford and 11 points from Collin Lanier and with four players in double-digits, Ragsdale wins it over Grimsley, 71-58…

The Dudley Panther boys topped Northern Guilford, 72-53, and for Dudley, the have found their “main man in the middle”, and that is Tyler Young…After a strong opening day on Wednesday, where TY scored 10 points in 8 minutes, today/Thursday, Young went off for 14 points and 15 rebounds, and with his big body, this kid should have a strong finishing day on Friday….Young saw 21 minutes of action on Thursday for Dudley and nobody else on the Dudley team, is doing the things Young is doing right now…Carson Lomax with 11 points and freshman Jackson Helms with 10 points for the NG Nighthawks…

Balanced scoring for the Dudley girls in their 49-16 win over the Smith Golden Eagles….For the second day in a-row, Smith could muster just 16 points on offense….Again, the Smith leader was India Sturdivant with 8 points…I am a big believer in the Sturdivant Family…We saw Chunky Sturdivant at the game tonight and he is one of the finest kids you will ever meet….This kid loves life and he makes it go good…Currently at Hampton University…The Dudley girls are moving on this year with Diamond Monroe gone to Ragsdale, Seyquoyah Johnson gone to High Point Andrews and we are not sure where Symphony Jackson is, she may be out sick, but those Dudley girls are having to rebuild on the fly…..

We must get out of here and fly on down the road…Need to get back to The HAECO, in time for the finals on Friday….
