GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Marcus Curry’s 13 points led four Quakers in double-figure scoring in Guilford College’s 82-58 basketball win over visiting Greensboro College Saturday.
The Quakers’ (7-4) fourth straight win came in the second game of the Guilford College Classic. The University of Lynchburg defeated Muskingum University, 75-66, in Saturday’s opener.
Greensboro (1-9), which overcame a 14-point deficit to beat Guilford in its season opener, dropped its ninth straight game. The Pride and Quakers were tied at 17-17 midway through the first half before Guilford closed the frame on a 21-9 run. Jaylen Gore scored five points in the spurt and netted all of his 10 points in the first half to help Guilford open a 38-26 halftime edge. The teams traded baskets to start the second half before Guilford broke the game open with a 21-2 run. Curry had seven points in that time, including a dunk after making a steal. He also had one of Guilford’s four three-pointers in the decisive spurt.
The Quakers had 11 different scorers in the game, including Carson Long, who scored 12 points in 18 minutes. Jaylen Gore notched his first college double-double with 10 points and a career-high 11 assists. He did not turn the ball over in 25 minutes at the point. Sophomore Jordan Wallis knocked down two of Guilford’s nine three-pointers on the way to a career-best 10 points. The Quakers shot 48.4 percent from the floor, including 56.7% in the second half. Guilford enjoyed a 50-29 rebounding edge and held a commanding 42-12 interior scoring advantage. Kyler Gregory, Liam Ward, and Steve Ruszala shared game-high honors with seven boards apiece.
Greensboro’s Eric Peaks, Jr. led all scorers with 18 points and four three-pointers off the bench. Kevon Meertins added 11 points and Carmoni Marks had 10 for Greensboro, which shot just 30.6 percent from the floor. Justin Minnis, the Pride’s top scorer, had five points in five minutes before leaving the game with an injury. He did not return.
Jesse Case’s three-pointer with 2:04 left in regulation broke a 64-64 tie in the opener and sent Lynchburg (10-1) to its 10th win in 11 games. Case, who scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, started an 11-2 Hornets’ run that ended the game. Lynchburg held the Fighting Muskies (5-6) without a field goal and just three points in final three-and-a-half minutes.
Lynchburg’s Austin Wrighten led all scorers with 21 points and had a game-best 11 rebounds for his team-leading seventh double-double this year. Teammates Connor Schroeder and Chance Greene both added 10 points as the Hornets captured their third straight win.
Muskingum’s Jayson Peoples knocked down five three-pointers and scored a team-high 19 points. Teammate Mitch Clark added 14 points and seven rebounds. Devon Peart added 12 points and four assists.
Sunday’s schedule starts with Lynchburg playing Greensboro at 2:00 p.m. Guilford hosts Muskingum afterward. Both games are in Guilford’s Ragan-Brown Field House.
