We have lost another “Big One” in/from the field of sports broadcasting:”Big Mo” Stanfield with ESPN 1590 and Play-by-Play voice for WSSU Rams football and basketball has passed away

**********Big Mo” Stanfield with ESPN 1590 and Play-by-Play voice for WSSU Rams football and basketball has passed away**********
He was one of the biggest names in Triad Sports Talk history, figuratively and literally and if you CLICK HERE, you will see what I am talking about…..”Big Mo” was a BIG man and he worked over at ESPN radio in High Point, and could be heard on that ESPN outlet until dark each day and then the radio station was almost impossible to pick up…ESPN 1590 could be heard throughout the Triad during the daylight hours and ESPN 1590 was the one of the first 24-hour sports stations to hit the Triad back in 2002…Before that you had 1320/1230 “The Ticket”, then there was 790 “The Ball” and now you have “The Sports Hub”, over there with WSJS/WCOG/WMFR, 600/1320/1230 AM….

“Big Mo’ was bringing the sports to you long before the current dudes were, and “Big Mo” had it going on brother, and it was all about bringing it to the people, back in those days…The best interview I ever heard “Big Mo” do, was when he interviewed Max Baer Jr., the son of boxer Max Baer and Max Baer Jr. was also very well-known for playing the part of Jethro Bodine, on the old Beverly Hillbillies TV show…Max Baer Jr. was getting ready to open up a casino out in Lake Tahoe, I think it was going to have a “Beverly Hillbillies” theme to it….So very entertaining when “Big Mo” was interviewing “Jethro Bodine”/Max Baer Jr. Baer Jr. also fronted and produced the movie Mason County Line and here is the skinny from Wikipedia on the Mason County Line movie and it blew me away, when I saw the profit they made from this movie…Jethro let it all go, on that interview with “Big Mo”, but here is the proof from Wikipedia….

The $225,000 film reportedly became the most profitable film of 1974 (in cost-to-gross ratio), earning $18.8 million in North America and over $30 million worldwide.

So “Big Mo” had some pretty good shows, back in those days on ESPN 1590 and we lost the ‘Big Man’, back on December 17….

He hosted two nationally syndicated sports talk shows and also worked at ESPN 1590 in Greensboro, WCCB in Clemson, S.C., Sports Radio 1400 in Columbia, S.C., and ESPN 730 in Charlotte. Stanfield was once the football and basketball play-by-play announcer at Winston-Salem State University.

Saint Augustine’s mourns death of radio personality Maurice ‘Big Mo’ Stanfield

Saint Augustine’s University is mourning the passing of well-known radio personality Maurice “Big Mo” Stanfield, who died on Monday, December 17.

Stanfield was the voice of Falcons’ football and basketball at WAUG as play-by-play announcer from 2009 to 2013. He returned to the station in the same role during the 2017 football season. Stanfield also worked as a sports announcer at Heritage Sports Radio Network (HSRN).

A 31-year veteran in the radio industry, Stanfield was well known in the Southeast for his blend of quick wit and insightful commentary, the university said in a news release Tuesday.

“Big Mo was one of a kind,” said Tony Middleton, WAUG general manager. “He simply lit up a press box with his jovial personality. Listeners were entertained and captivated while being informed at the same time. Somehow, Big Mo could talk about Ric Flair during a football telecast and make it work. There will never be another broadcaster like Big Mo.”

A Chicago native, Stanfield received acclaim for his distinct style when he was named CIAA Sportscaster of the Year in 2010. That year, Stanfield called some of the biggest sports moments in Saint Aug’s history, including the CIAA Basketball Tournament, the CIAA Baseball Championship Game and the Pioneer Football Bowl. The Falcons won titles in all three events.

“He was one of the most generous and kind human beings I’ve ever met,” said George Williams, athletic director. “I am saddened and heartbroken but God knows best. His voice was golden. I know he is in heaven now announcing for God.”

Funeral arrangements were announced later in the week, according to the university.

Here are a couple of “Big Mo” stories/posts that ran here at the site, back in the day…..

Big Mo gets the boot at WSSU
Posted by Andy Durham on October 22, 2007 at 3:31 pm under Uncategorized | 25 Comments to Read | Edit

WSSU’s student newspaper The Argus reported in the October 15th issue that Maurice ” Big Mo” Stanfield was dismissed as the voice of the Rams for comments that he felt ‘unappriciated’ and that ‘this might be my last game for the station’.

Mo has been the voice of the Rams since 2006, he also has a syndicated program with the Talk Star radio network that Mo broadcast from his home in Jamestown. The show can be heard from 6-8PM eastern time at www.talkstarradio.com , the website list the show as starting at 5pm but it actually starts at 6pm.

Prior to Talk-Star Mo was the afternoon drive host for ESPN radio WYSR 1590 in High Point. Mo also has done sports talk show stints with stations in both Carolina’s, and Virginia.

The return of the “Big Mo Show”
Posted by Andy Durham on March 11, 2011 at 11:51 am under College, Professional

Was going miles and miles up and down the radio dial yesterday, looking for the different forms of ACC Basketball Tournament Coverage on the airwaves and I came across something at around 5:40pm, as I was sitting in my car in the parking lot down near the Central Library……

On Power 750AM, which is WAUG out of the Raleigh/New Hope area, I found a sports show and it was hosted by “Big Mo”…..Maurice “Big Mo” Stanfield, on ‘The Big Mo Show’…..

Big Mo used to run the show over at ESPN Radio 1590 WYSR(High Point) back in the day….It was probably about 5-7 years ago when Big Mo had that show….Now he is on 5-6pm on Power 750AM and Power750.com…..Power 750AM carries Saint Augustine University sports from the CIAA and Big Mo is doing those games too and he was just recently named, the CIAA Broadcaster of the Year….

The Big Mo Show is still on the go and now you know where to go get it……5-6pm on 750AM and let’s hope that the clouds down in New Hope/Raleigh area are aligned properly on the day you try and get the “Big Mo Show”….

In a previous life, “Big Mo” was on an FM Sports Talk station down in South Carolina, maybe WCCP and it was near Clemson, South Carolina and before that he was up in the Richmond, Virginia/Petersburg, Virginia area doing sports……

“Big Mo”, still on the go……..Check out his show on 750AM…..

If you start hitting 750AM at night, then you are going to end up with WSB Atlanta………

The Rage said,

I had the priveledge and great PLEASURE to work with “Big Mo” in the late-90’s, IS a consumate professional as well, as a “real person”…Rare INDEED in this biz.

I mean, when was the last time you sat down in a small studio with the likes of Tiki Barber eh?

I miss Mo’..Glad to hear he’s around!. AND can never thank him enough for allowing me to produce his show when he could’ve probably gotten a ton of more talented folks to do so. (Not to mention the fact, he let me pick his theme song, from the Rev Horton Heat!)

IF you get this Mo, give me a shout…
