Guilford College Quakers win a squeaker on Saturday afternoon, 64-63 and Jaylen Gore(Northwest Guilford HS) is becoming one of the top guards in Quaker basketball history

At the Guilford College campus, off of West Friendly Avenue and New Garden Road, the Quakers’ basketball season is just starting to get good…Great game on this Saturday afternoon, as Guilford came back to defeat Randolph Macon, 64-63….Great effort from Guilford’s point guard, Jaylen Gore, and the junior from Northwest Guilford High School, is fast becoming one of the top guards to ever lace up the basketball sneakers, at Guilford College…..

In the Quakers victory on Saturday afternoon, Gore had 14 points, five rebounds(all on defensive end) and three assists…Gore’s defense also played a pivotal role in Guilford’s win…One of Gore’s major assets may be something that could go unnoticed…It is his ability to break down the opposing defense and break back court pressure and get the basketball past half court, and into the front court and by Gore getting the ball past the half court stripe, Gore allows Guilford a chance to set up their offense, in the half court…

Gore breaks down the opposition’s defense by using a deliberate back-and-forth cross-over dribble….Back-and-forth, left and right, then right and left, and Gore’s ability to switch the ball, back-and-forth, from one hand and then to another, that gives him the lift he needs to beat his defender and start running the offense and once he gets that basketball past the mid-court line, all is fine, and Gore has the Guilford offense rolling…

It was a pleasure watching him on this Saturday, as Gore broke down that Randolph Macon defense, and Gore did it all with maximum confidence….The kid can play and played the FULL/maximum 40 minutes in the Quaker victory, this afternoon in Ragan Brown Field House….

Gore is taking his Guilford College Quaker college basketball career to the max…The kid from Northwest Guilford High School, just 5.5 miles from the Quaker campus, is making a name for himself at Guilford…I see this kid now positioning himself among the top Quaker guards, in Guilford College men’s basketball history…

Gore finding his spot among the hallowed ground of the likes of Teddy East, Bert Feik, Jerry Crocker, Bo Whitaker, Pat Morarity, Johnny Ralls and many more from the outstanding teams, of Quakers past…

Keep your eyes and ears on this Gore kid…My prediction is you will hear more from Gore, before this young man is finished with his college basketball career, at Guilford College…

I liked what I saw today, and again, his ability to break down the opposing defenses may be his strongest trait of all, and his does it all well….Scoring, assisting, rebounding, and just being a team leader….Gore’s teammates look to him to get that ball up the court, and he gets the job done…

Fine effort from Gore today and nice job turned in too, by Marcus Curry, the Quaker senior, from Northern Guilford High School….

Here is more on what they were doing today, from Guilford College SID Dave Walters’ post game notes…..

Marcus Curry’s(Northern Guilford High School) driving layup with 35 seconds left in regulation gave Guilford College a 64-63 upset basketball win over 15th-ranked Randolph-Macon College Saturday.

Jaylen Gore(Northwest Guilford High School) finished with 14 points, 10 in the second half, and also had five rebounds and three assists. Curry tallied 11 points off the bench, nine in the second half.

“We played really tough and really physical and basically made one more play than they did,” Guilford coach Tom Palombo said afterward. “We had a defensive play at the end of the game. They didn’t get a shot off and that was it. If they score right there, we’re having a different conversation. I’m proud of our guys and the way they came back.”
