HPU WLAX Opens Season with 21-12 Win over Furman

• Senior Samantha Herman had a career-high seven points with five goals and two assists
• Junior Ashley Britton and sophomores Abby Hormes and Kaely Kyle each scored four goals
• Sophomore Sarah Zeto made nine saves in net

GREENVILLE, S.C. — The High Point University women’s lacrosse team opened the 2019 season with a 21-12 win at Furman Saturday afternoon (Feb. 9) in Greenville, S.C.

After the Paladins (0-1) scored two goals in the first two minutes, the Panthers (1-0) scored the next six goals to take a 6-2 lead. After Furman closed the gap to 10-7 with 1:42 left in the first half, High Point came back with another 6-0 run to take break open the game at 16-7 with 22:06 remaining.

The Panthers led in shots, 38-26, and ground balls, 28-16. The Paladins held a slight 18-17 advantage in the draw circle.

“We showed a lot of resilience today and I’m happy with the way the team found different ways of scoring,” HPU head coach Lyndsey Boswell said. “With seven new starters, we needed a minute to settle in, and thankfully we did that quickly. We are excited to get some kinks out this week and get ready for UNC on Friday.”

Senior Samantha Herman tallied a career-high seven points with five goals and two assists. Junior Ashley Britton and sophomores Abby Hormes and Kaely Kyle each scored four goals. In goal, sophomore Sarah Zeto (1-0) made nine saves and picked up a career-high nine ground balls to earn the win.

Britton and redshirt junior Meredith Chapman led HPU with six draw controls each, while Hormes added four. Freshman Julia Nicastro added three points with a goal and two assists, while senior Valerie Pelling scored a pair of goals. Rounding out the scoring was sophomore Sabrina Schrader, who scored one goal.

Furman was led by Grace Pollak with three goals and three assists. Courtney Baker made six saves in net, but took the loss.

Up next, the Panthers travel to No. 2 North Carolina on Friday (Feb. 15). First draw from Chapel Hill, N.C., is set for 6 p.m.
