Davie County withstood a furious effort from East Forsyth to hold on for a 63-58 victory in Jack Musten Gymnasium Tuesday night in Kernersville. The win gave the War Eagles, now 21-1, the Central Piedmont 4A Conference regular season championship with only a win in Friday night’s home game against Reagan left to complete an unbeaten CPC schedule.

Davie County led by ten points at the end of the first quarter but East scored nine points in the next 90 seconds to close the gap to one. Davie gradually stretched its lead back to ten at the half, hitting five three-point FGs in the first two periods.

Back to back three-point plays by the Eagles’ Javon Cobbs & Ty Lyles Midway through the third quarter tied the game at 42 & East regained the lead (48-47) on Lyles’ three-point with 4:57 remaining. But Davie’s Jacob Hendrix hit three-pointers on three straight possessions while East came up empty on its three offensive opportunities to stretch the lead back to 58-50 with two minutes remaining.

The Eagles, now 13-8, narrowed their deficit to three points twice down the stretch but could get no closer than 61-58 after an offensive rebound FG by Khaliq McCummings, the game’s leading scorer with 17, with 35 seconds remaining.

Michael Walton led a balanced Davie attach with 15 points & grabbed seven rebounds. Troy Griggs also had 15 for the War Eagles and Hendrix added 14 including his crucial Fourth-quarter three-pointers, the only 3s of the second half for the winners. Matt Rivers added 11 points & six rebounds for East. EF’s Torrian Jackson led all rebounders with eight.

East Forsyth closes it’s regular season with Senior Night Friday against RJ Reynolds. The CPC Tournament begins next Monday with quarterfinal games.
