Game Report on Southwest Guilford-North Forsyth Boys Basketball:Martin, Turner, Langleys all of the seniors go out in style, as “The Ranch” goes all out for the SWG Cowboys and the seniors, including Dez Woods
It was Senior night here at the Ranch. The Southwest Guilford Cowboys hosted the Vikings of North Forsyth. The Cowboys were looking to keep their perfect season rolling and send their seniors off with a bang.
In the earlier match-up between these conference foes, the Cowboys won convincingly over at North Forsyth, so the visiting VIkings were looking to get some revenge and spoil the Cowboys emotional evening. The jitters were in effect as the senior lineup took the court.
Southwest was able to get on the board to get up 2-0, but some defensive miscues allowed the Vikings to take the lead with a 4-0 spurt, taking us to 4-2 at the 5:11 mark. The opening butterflies must have finally flown away, as a mere 24 seconds later had the Cowboys up 6-4.That was the spark of a 12-0 run that pushed the Cowboys out to an 12-4 lead by the 1:40 mark. The slightly disheveled quarter was pretty much even the rest of the frame as it closed with Southwest only up 18-9.
The second quarter was when things started to click, and the engine started revving. After allowing a three pointer, the Cowboys started another 10-0 run to get the lead to 28-12. The Vikings weren’t going down without giving it there all and they stopped the run and called a timeout when as it put the score to 28-14 at the 5:18 mark. Unfortunately for North Forsyth, the stoppage in play didn’t phase the Cowboys. It spurred a nice 13-0 run that got the score out to 41-14 with 3:05 to play in the half. Once again the Vikings wouldn’t lay down, and they fought hard and played more effectively and played the Cowboys even the rest of the half and it closed at 53-23.
The Vikings came out of the break scoring a basket first which started a brief window of the teams trading baskets with that trend ending at the 5:30 mark with the score 57-30. The Cowboys really started to clamp down defensively which made it very difficult for the Vikings to execute in the half court. That led to easy transition baskets and breakaway dunks. When the dust settled, the Cowboys had scored 17 straight points to get out to 74-30. A late basket by the Vikings ended the streak, and the frame closed quickly at 74-32.
The final frame was over quickly as the running clock wound down the conclusion of senior night very quickly. A great team effort allowed for an emotional highlight as Christian Martin scored his 1000th career point that put the score at 90-41. Southwest cruised to another convincing win over North Forsyth with the score being 96-45.
The Vikings were led by Mark Megginson with 11 points. The Cowboys played a tremendous team game with the whole roster once again getting playing time and contributing to this strong win. Some impressive stats on the night were: Christian Martin with (26, 2 Stls, 2 Rebs) and Jayden Turner with (24, 5 Rebs, 2 Asts, 2 Stls). Kobe Langley chipped in an impressive night with (7, 11 Rebs, 5 Asts, 4 Stls), as well as his fellow senior Keyshaun Langley with (8, 10 Asts, 5 Stls, 3 Rebs).
We cannot thank this outstanding Senior class enough for all that they have done for this program and community. These parents did an amazing job raising these awesome young men that represent Southwest so well.
Thank you so very much! With the win tonight, the Cowboys improve to 23-0 and 11-0 and clinch the Piedmont Triad 3A Conference regular season title.
Southwest plays on the road at Mount Tabor on Friday night to close out the regular season.
