Game Report on Southwest Guilford-Mount Tabor Boys Basketball:Cowboys ride to (24-0) season with Martin, Kobe Langley, Thompson, Pettiford and Turner on the front burner in this C’boys victory

The Cowboys of Southwest Guilford hit the road for their regular season finale.

It was a match-up of the top two seeds of the Piedmont Triad 3A, the visiting Cowboys and the Mount Tabor Spartans.

Southwest is currently ranked #2 by MaxPreps with Mount Tabor ranked 8th overall in North Carolina. Southwest had already locked up the regular season Conference title, but were looking to finish out the season undefeated and head into post season play unblemished.

A dominant second half allowed the Cowboys to pull away for a strong win at home in the first tilt between these two opponents. Would playing on the Spartans home floor, and on their senior night change the outcome?

Well the Spartans came out riding high and took advantage of an ice cold Cowboys team. Mount Tabor scored the first 6 points to make it 6-0 at the 5:07 mark. Southwest missed their first 7 shots before they finally got on the board at the 4:04 mark to make it 6-2. That was the beginning of a strong 12-0 run that put the Cowboys up 12-6 with 1:34 to play in the first quarter. The Spartans stopped the run with a three pointer cutting it to 12-9 1:10 left. The Cowboys scored the last 7 points of the frame and it closed with Southwest up 19-9.

The Cowboys weren’t done, and another 7-0 run to open the frame got the game out to 26-9 at the 6:55 mark. Mount Tabor made a free throw to stop the run. The frame went back and forth as the teams traded blows. The Cowboys tried to pull away, but the Spartans wouldn’t let it get to far away from them, and the half closed with Southwest up 46-25.

The opening minutes of the second half were a physical battle that was blow for blow. But by midway through the frame the Cowboys tenacious defense started to wear down the hosts, and little by little the margin grew. The margin got up as high as 36, but the frame closed at 74-43.

The final frame once again was a testament to the depth of the Cowboys. The Southwest lead once again peaked to as many as 38. The Spartans gritted down the lead back down to under thirty. The depth of the Cowboys held strong as they held strong for a 91-64 road win.

The Cowboys finish the year undefeated for the second time in 6 years at 24-0 and 12-0 in Conference play.

Mount Tabor was led by Quest Aldridge with 16 points. Southwest was led by: Christian Martin with (17, 4 Rebs, Stl), Kobe Langley with (13, 6 Asts, 5 Rebs, 5 Stls), Cam Thompson with (12, 2 Ast, 2 Rebs, Stl), Joel Pettiford with (12, 7 Rebs, 3 Blks), and Jayden Turner with (11, 4 Rebs, 2 Stls). It was another great team effort by the Cowboys, and will play Tuesday night in the conference tournament.
