Game Report on Greensboro Day-Charlotte Country Day Boys Basketball:GDS Bengals go on 18-0 run to begin 4th Q and blow by CCDS Buccaneers(Charlotte led 38-37 going to the 4th)

Final Today from Greensboro Day:Greensboro Day School boys 55, Charlotte Country Day 42

It was almost like a drive-by, the Greensboro Day School Bengals trailed Charlotte Country Day School 38-37, going into the 4th quarter of today’s NCISAA 4-A Quarterfinal game of the 2019 NCISAA Boys Basketball Tournament, and then the GDS Bengals proceeded to go on an 18-0 run to begin the final period, and not allowing one single point from the beginning of the 4th Q, until there was only 1:29 left in the basketball game…..The GDS defense held Charlotte Country Day scoreless for 6 minutes and thirty-one seconds of the fourth and final quarter today…..The Bengal defense ruled that fourth quarter….
(And this was a Quarterfinal game of the State Tournament, to play defense like, that is really saying something, and making a huge statement.)

The Greensboro Day School Bengals went on that run and they just blew right by Charlotte Country Day and at times in the 4th quarter, a few of the Charlotte Country Day School Buccaneers were just standing there, really trying to figure out what was going on…The Bengals turned up the heat and it all was started by a basketball from Noah Dunn, which gave him his 2,000th point for his high school career…More on that in a few….

Very good start to the game by Greensboro Day and a super strong finish…GDS led 15-14 at the end of the first quarter….As we mentioned, GDS got off to a strong start, but every time you looked around, CCD was hitting a three and all of the sudden, they were right back in the game…

The second period showed us a lot of what we saw in the first, with GDS staying in front and taking a 28-27 lead to locker room at halftime…

In the second half, as the third quarter unfolded, Charlotte Country made their fair share of steals on defense and the Buccaneers were converting the steals and Bengal turnovers into Buccaneer buckets and therefore, the score became 38-37 Bucs over the Bengals as we hit the fourth and final period…

And that is when the onslaught hit/began…The GDS Begnals’ hands hit the floor, as assistant coach Jeff Smith was yelling for the Bengal defense to step up their game and that is exactly what the Greensboro Day School did….That defense sparked Freddy Johnson’s squad to that 18-0 run, to give GDS their total domination of the 4th quarter and for many fans around the Charlotte Country Day seating section in the Dillard Athletic Center, those CCD fans were wondering if their Buccaneers were ever going to score again in this game…

For GDS, the defense was a team effort and assistant coach Smith got the most out of his men today, especially in that fourth stanza…For Coach Johnson, his offense saw Cam Hayes start hitting three’s, Josh Taylor get some tip-ins and several key finishes around the basket/rim, Carson McCorkle found his range from outside the arc, his last two made buckets were three’s, Nic Evtimov was making that nice five-foot straight away jump shot, and then along came Noah Dunn, with his big three, a two and and some key free throws…One of Dunn’s deals was a three-point play the old fashioned way…

For the Bengals, Hayes had 13 points, Dunn had 11, it was Taylor and McCorkle with 10 each, Inge had 7 and Evtimov had 4 points for the GDS Bengals….

A quick reverse layup for Noah Dunn, as he scored the 2,000th point of his varsity career today…Noah had 1,000 points in his time spent at Vandalia Christian School, 600 points during his days as a Piedmont Classical School Bobcat, and it is 400-plus points for Noah Dunn, as a Greensboro Day School Bengal and that gives him now over 2,000 points for his varsity basketball career…Congrats to big man for hanging in there and reaching this milestone, for his basketball career…

Excellent win by the GDS Bengals today and that might have been the best quarter of basketball they have played all season long, when you look back at the fourth quarter of their game today….We always talk about a team wanting it, well GDS wanted it. and they took it in that final 8 minutes out on Lawndale Drive this afternoon. and they worked their tails off to get it done…

On to the NCISAA Semifinals for GDS next, and their next game should roll up next Friday, as the 2019 NCISAA Basketball Tournament rolls on….

Charlotte Country Day School scoring from today’s game:
Alex Tabor with 15 points to lead the Buccaneers and he had 4 three-pointers…Rylan McLaurin, a very quick guard had 9 points for the Bucs and it was 9 points as well for Richard Gillespie, a very steady inside player for CCD, Jackson Krisko scored four pts. for Charlotte, Julian Williams added three pts. for the Bucs, and Myles Browner closed the Buccaneer scoring with 2 points…

**********Charlotte Country Day closes out their season at (18-12) and the Greensboro Day School Bengals improve to (28-5) as they move into the NCISAA 4-A Semifinal round…..**********
