HAMPTON, Va. — The High Point University men’s basketball team came from 11 down in regulation and went on to pick up a big road win in overtime at Hampton, 86-81, Saturday evening (Feb. 16) at the Hampton University Convocation Center.

Down 11 with under six minutes to go and down five with 28 seconds remaining, the Panthers (14-12, 7-5 Big South) stormed back to force regulation. After junior Jahaad Proctor hit a pair of free throws, the Panthers were able to force a turnover and sophomore Denny Slay found Proctor on the right wing, who drained a 3-pointer to tie the game.

In overtime, Proctor and Slay each hit 3-point field goals and the Panthers went 12-of-16 from the free throw line in the extra period to bring home the win.

HPU finished the game shooting 31-of-38 free throws (81.6 percent) and shot 40.7 percent from the field (24-59). Hampton (10-15, 5-7 Big South) shot 39.4 percent (28-71) and had 67 points come from Jermaine Marrow (40 points) and Kalin Fisher (27).

“I love our guys that they didn’t quit and kept fighting,” HPU head coach Tubby Smith said. “Denny Slay really stepped up, Jahaad (Proctor) made a couple plays and Ricky (Madison) was on the boards all day long for us, getting second and third chances for us. We did a good job of pressing and it gave us some momentum and belief that we were still in the ball game. Then we were able to convert from the free throw line, which was huge.”

Proctor led HPU with 29 points, while senior Jordan Whitehead added 14 points and eight rebounds. Senior Ricky Madison recorded his fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while junior Brandonn Kamga posted 12 points.

Off the bench, Slay finished with nine points and five assists, while sophomore Tim Cameron added seven points and four rebounds in 21 minutes of action.

In the first half, the Pirates pushed its lead to seven at 23-16 with 4:50 left before the Panthers ended the half on a 7-2 run as Hampton led, 25-23, at the break.

Up next, the Panthers travel to Buies Creek, N.C., for a nationally-televised game at Campbell on Thursday (Feb. 21). Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
