HPU WLAX Defeats Marquette, 20-9, Behind Big Second Half

• The Panthers defeated a second Big East opponent in three days with a 20-9 win over Marquette
• Sophomore Abby Hormes recorded six points with two goals and four points
• Junior Ashley Britton tallied five goals and four draw controls

HIGH POINT, N.C. — A strong second half propelled the High Point University women’s lacrosse team to a 20-9 victory over Marquette Sunday afternoon (March 3) at Vert Stadium.

After the Golden Eagles (3-4) scored the first goal of the second half, the Panthers (3-2) scored the next six goals to open up the game. It was the Panthers’ second win in three days over Big East opponents, as HPU defeated Old Dominion, 17-4, on Friday night (March 1).

“I’m really pleased with this weekend as a whole,” HPU head coach Lyndsey Boswell said. “I thought we came out highly focused on Friday and we brought that same energy today and I’m really proud of the girls for getting after it today.”

High Point held a 42-23 advantage in shots and led in ground balls, 17-12. Both teams picked up 15 draw controls.

Sophomore Abby Hormes led the Panthers with six points on two goals and four assists, while junior Ashley Britton scored five goals and earned four draw controls.

Senior Samantha Herman picked up a team-leading seven ground balls and scored a hat trick, while fellow senior Allie Little added four goals and an assist.

Additional goal scorers for High Point were senior Valerie Pelling and sophomore Kaely Kyle with two each and junior Kylie Holthaus and sophomore Nicole Pugh with a goal each.

In goal, sophomore Sarah Zeto made eight saves in 43:32 of action, while junior Jill Rall made a save in the last 16:12 of play.

Charlotte McGuire led the Golden Eagles with four goals.

Up next, the Panthers host No. 11 Florida on Saturday (March 9). First draw at Vert Stadium is set for 2 p.m. and the game will be the second contest of a doubleheader with the HPU men, who play UMBC at 11 a.m. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
