HPU WBB Panthers Come Back to Win at Campbell

• HPU opened the fourth with a 13-0 run to take the lead after trailing by as many as 15 points in the second half.
• Senior Emma Bockrath led High Point with 19 points, five rebounds and five assists.
• Junior Miya Bull grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The High Point University women’s basketball team defeated Campbell, 70-69, on Saturday (March 9) behind a 15-point second half comeback. The 22nd win of the season ties the program record for wins in the Division I era set in the 2013-14 season.

High Point (22-7, 15-3) out-rebounded Campbell (18-11, 10-8) 33-27. The Panthers shot 46.3 (25-54) percent from the field and 81.8 (18-22) percent from the free throw line, while the Camels made 42.0 (21-50) from the filed and 94.4 (17-18) percent from the charity stripe. HPU dished out 14 assists and grabbed eight steals.

“It’s not easy to go to Campbell and get a win,” HPU head coach DeUnna Hendrix said. “I’m incredibly proud of our poise when things weren’t going right. At this point, we’ve seen just about everything. I like where we’re at as a team going into the tournament.”

Senior Emma Bockrath led the Panthers with 19 points and five assists, while junior Miya Bull grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Bockrath added five rebounds of her own and went 6-6 at the free throw line and 6-12 (50.0 percent) from the field.

HPU trailed 37-41 with 7:45 left in the third then Campbell went on a 12-4 run to take a 41-53 lead. The Camels led by 15 at 58-43 with 1:13 remaining in the third quarter. The Panthers trailed 45-58 after three quarters. High Point opened up the fourth quarter with a 13-0 run to take a 60-58 lead with five minutes remaining. Both teams traded blows in last five minutes. The Panthers out-scored the Camels 25-11 in the fourth quarter to win the game 70-69.

The Purple & White had a 19-16 lead after the first quarter. High Point shot 52.0 (13-25) percent from the field and scored 15 points off of 13 Campbell turnovers in the first half. The teams went back-and-forth in the second quarter and the Panthers trailed the Camels 33-36 at halftime. Bockrath scored 15 points in the first half for HPU.

Senior Bria Gibson scored 14 points on 5-7 shooting (71.4 percent), while Bull added nine points of her own. Senior Shea Morgan finished with 12 points, three rebounds and two steals, while senior Lindsey Edwards pitched in seven points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The Panthers out-scored the Camels off the bench (25-20), off turnovers (22-16) and in the paint (30-16).

Up next, the Panthers will host the winner of No. 7 Charleston Southern and No. 10 USC Upstate in the Big South Conference Tournament on Thursday, March 14. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. in the Millis Center.
