College Baseball Finals: #6 Randolph-Macon 7-19, Guilford 3-2

collected five hits as sixth-ranked Randolph-Macon College swept an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader at Guilford College on Sunday afternoon. Game scores were 7-3 and 19-2. Game two was shortened to eight innings due to darkness.

Following the two games, the Yellow Jackets improved to 3-1 and 2-0 in conference play. The Quakers, who dropped their sixth straight contest, fell to 5-9 and 0-2 in the ODAC.

In the opener, GC outhit Randolph-Macon, 9-6. Guilford’s Tanner Hobbs went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs. Ryan Hill had a home run in four at-bats for the home club.

Yet R-MC pitcher Nick Roth (1-0) tossed a complete game and earned the win for the visitors. He worked nine innings, scattered nine hits, fanned nine Quakers and allowed no walks.

Rhett Miller (1-2) was tagged with the defeat for the Quakers. He started and threw 4 1/3 frames, gave up four runs (two earned) and four hits. Miller struck out four but walked four batters. Three other Quakers pitched in the contest.

Nickles went 2-of-3 with a double, scored twice and drove in two Yellow Jackets.

In the nightcap, R-MC recorded 20 hits, including eight extra-base hits, to prevail in eight innings. Nickles hit 3-for-4 with two doubles, tallied three runs and had four RBI. Jacob Selden was 3-for-4, scored twice and recorded two RBI.

The Yellow Jackets chased starter Mitchell Stumpo (1-2) after 1 1/3 innings. He surrendered nine runs and eight hits for the home team. R-MC’s Michael Zubovich (1-0) earned the victory for Randolph-Macon. He fanned nine Quakers and allowed no bases on balls. Zubovich gave up seven hits and two runs.

Dylan Tuttle led Guilford at the plate after going 3-of-4 and driving in one run. Teammate Ellis Stokes was 2-for-2 with a double and scored both of GC’s runs.

The Quakers play Greensboro College on Tuesday (3/12). Game time is 6 p.m. at nearby Ted Leonard Park.
