CAA Selects Elon’s Kirby Co-Pitcher of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. – For the third time in four weeks, Elon University baseball’s George Kirby has secured CAA weekly honors as the league office named him Co-Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday afternoon, March 12. The junior earned the honor outright on Feb. 19 and again on Feb. 26.

In the first game of a doubleheader Sunday versus Bryant, the Rye, N.Y. native tossed his first career shutout to help the Phoenix to a 1-0 win and improve to 3-0 on the year. The right hander faced two batters over the minimum and retired 18 consecutive batters after allowing the lone hit for the visitors. He also reached double-digit strikeouts for the third time in four outings, striking out 11 Bulldogs to tie his season high, and did not issue a walk. Against 99 batters faced this season, he has given up one free pass to first base. Sunday’s effort lowered his ERA to a 1.71.

The Phoenix makes the short drive down US-70 this afternoon for the first game in a home-and-home series with UNCG. First pitch against the Spartans (10-4) is scheduled for 4 p.m. at UNCG Baseball Stadium in Greensboro, N.C.
