HPU Track: Zoe Geis Takes 5000m Win In Atlanta

ATLANTA, Ga. – High Point University track and field’s outdoor season officially got underway this Friday, as five Panther athletes competed in day one of the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Atlanta, Ga.

Senior Britton Mann opened up the weekend over in the men’s hammer throw, completing a toss of 44.09m for an 11th place finish. Mann set a pair of throw records for HPU in the indoor season this year, after tallying a 16.15m in the weight throw and a 15.21m in the shot put. His performance in Atlanta on Friday came within a meter of his personal best (44.93m), which also stands as a program record.

The Panthers excelled on the track, placing all four of their participating runners in the 5000m within the top-six. Zoe Geis led the way with her 17:31.38 earning an event win on the evening. The junior was followed close behind by Lindsey Ickes in third (17:52.36), competing in the first outdoor meet of her collegiate career.

Senior Courtney Kerr set a new personal record with her 17:59.29 fourth-place finish, while freshman Julia Hellman rounded out the Panther finishers, coming in sixth overall (18:02.66).

The Panthers get back to work this Saturday, opening day two of the Yellow Jacket Invitational in the field, competing in the shot put, javelin and pole vault at 11 a.m. The day’s track events will start at 12:30 p.m., beginning with the men’s and women’s 4x100m relays.
