Elon Baseball Phoenix Secures Third-Straight CAA Series Win

TOWSON, Md. – Eight Elon University baseball batters collected a hit and Tyler Stanley hit a grand slam as the maroon and gold defeated Towson 16-8 Sunday, April 7 at John B. Schuerholz Park. With the 2-1 series win, the Phoenix improves to 18-14 on the season and 7-2 in CAA play.

BOX SCORE | FINAL RESULTS

Jared Wetherbee (3-3) earned the win after striking out a career-high 12 batters through 6.0 innings. The left-hander did not give up an earned run as Towson plated two unearned on four hits and as many walks. Elon also threw Naushon Galbraith, Brandon Justice, and Ty Adcock.

Stanley led Elon at the plate as he finished 3-for-6 with the home run, two runs scored, and five RBIs. Also going yard were Adcock, Nick Cicci, Matt Oldham, and Anthony Galason. The freshman out of Colts Neck, N.J. went 3-for-5 and added two doubles, two runs, three RBIs, and a walk. Adcock hit 2-for-4, Cicci batted 2-for-5, and Jack Roberts was a perfect 2-for-2 with a double.

How It Happened: Elon got started in the top of the second as Adcock and Adam Spurlin both walked and Oldham was hit by a pitch. Towson couldn’t make the play on a Roberts hit up the middle, which scored a run and kept the bases juiced. Stanley then brought everyone home as he laced a 1-2 offering over the wall in left field. After Cicci helped turn a double play to end the third, the Charlotte, N.C. native led off the fourth with a solo shot to left.

The Tigers (4-25, 1-5) answered in the home half of the frame as a single and a throwing error allowed a runner to score from second. However, Elon had another big inning with four runs in the fifth. Cam Devanney earned a free trip to first and Adcock followed with a bomb to left center. Later, a Roberts double to left brought in Spurlin and a Stanley hit to the shortstop scored Oldham. The Phoenix added two more in the sixth as Oldham, hitting in the DH spot, went yard for his second homer of the season.

Towson got back a run in the bottom of the sixth as a single to center and a fielding error allowed a Tiger to cross the plate. Elon responded in the seventh as Galason doubled and came in on a Joe Satterfield hit. However, the hosts started to gather momentum with three runs on two hits in the bottom of the seventh. The Tigers got one in on an RBI ground out, then secured two more on a double to center.

Both teams traded three-spots in the ninth. After Galason skied an 0-1 pitch to make it a 16-5 game, the Tigers put up a fight with three runs of their own. Towson put two on thanks to a pair of walks. The next batter then reached on a dropped fly ball to right and a throwing error allowed the two runners to come in. The batter moved up to third on the play, and tagged up on a sacrifice fly to center. Towson ran out of outs, though, as Elon recorded a 6-3 put out and Adcock fanned a batter to end the game.
