No. 25 High Point WLAX Earns No. 1 Seed with 17-6 Win at Winthrop

• The Panthers clinched the No. 1 seed in the Big South Tournament for the third-consecutive season
• Sophomore Abby Hormes moved into fifth all-time on HPU’s record book with 113 career goals
• Redshirt-junior Meredith Chapman broke the HPU single-season record for caused turnovers with 42.

ROCK HILL, S.C. — The No. 25 High Point University women’s lacrosse team pulled away from Winthrop, 17-6, Saturday (April 20) at Eagle Field to clinch the No. 1 seed in the Big South Tournament.

The Panthers (13-4, 6-0 Big South) completed their third-consecutive undefeated conference regular season. As the No. 1 seed, High Point hosts the Big South Tournament April 26 and 28 at Vert Stadium. HPU will play No. 4 seed Campbell at 4 p.m. on Friday (April 26). No. 2 Longwood will face No. 3 Winthrop at 7 p.m. in the other semifinal. The winners of the semifinals will play for the championship Sunday (April 28) at 2 p.m.

After the Eagles (7-10, 4-2 Big South) scored three of four goals to close the Panther lead to 6-4 with 12:19 left in the first half, HPU went on to score 11 of the final 13 goals to pull away with the victory. High Point led in shots, 42-11, draw controls, 19-6, and ground balls, 21-9.

“Today was a complete team effort, and we are really excited to come out on top,” HPU head coach Lyndsey Boswell said. “Our defense and draw unit together gave us a lot of opportunities on offense. To go 6-0 and win this Big South Regular Season Championship on the road means a lot to this program. We are excited to host a third-straight championship and make our University proud next weekend.”

Sophomore Abby Hormes led the Panther offense with seven points on four goals and three assists. Hormes moved into fifth all-time in program history with 113 career goals. She is also climbing the all-time HPU single-season lists, and currently is third in points (86, one away from the record), fourth in goals (54, seven away from the record) and is second in draw controls (72, seven away from the record).

Redshirt-junior Meredith Chapman recorded her 42nd caused turnover of the season, breaking the single-season HPU record.

Sophomore Nicole Pugh recorded five points on three goals and two assists, while senior Allie Little added two goals and two assists. Seniors Samantha Herman and Valerie Pelling and sophomore Rachel Foster each tallied two goals each.
