New Hanover baseball beats Gray’s Creek behind Sniffen’s no-hitter
Kyle Smith, Blake Walston combine for eight RBIs in the Wildcats’ win.

The biggest question coming into a season where the New Hanover baseball team looked to defend a state championship was who would step up as the Wildcats No. 2 pitcher?

The answer for a majority of the regular season was senior Alex Sniffen, and through one start in the postseason, Sniffen continues to look up for the challenge.

The N.C. Central signee tossed a no-hitter in New Hanover’s 10-0 mercy-rule win over Gray’s Creek in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3A Playoffs Friday. Sniffen is now 7-0 and has given up just one earned run in 47 innings pitched.

“I think Alex always knew, even in his first three years here when he wasn’t part of our pitching equation, that he was going to have an opportunity to rack up some innings as a senior,” New Hanover head coach Richard Foy said. “He put in the work… and that’s what I’m most proud of. His desire to get better.”

Sniffen struck out seven batters through five innings pitched and yielded just two walks. He also faced the minimum, as both of the Gray’s Creek batters who reached eventually made base-running mistakes that squashed any momentum for the visitors.

The tall righty used an electric fastball to paint the outside corner throughout the night, but it was his offspeed stuff that led to a dominating performance.

“I felt like my curveball was the biggest thing for me tonight. I could throw it at any county and when it’s working I’ve got a lot of confidence, Sniffen said.

No. 1 New Hanover (22-1) also put forth a dominant offensive performance Friday night. UNC-Pembroke commit Landon Harris cruised throughn the first two innings for No. 16 Gray’s Creek (16-4), but the Wildcats’ bats eventually came to life behind Kyle Smith and Blake Walston.

Smith went 3-for-4 and had five RBIs, while Walston went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Smith started the scoring with a two-run homer off the scoreboard in left field in the bottom of the second, and Walston made it 5-0 with a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the third.

“We’re feeling pretty confident. A lot of our practices lately have just been focused on hitting and trying to keep getting better at the plate. The coaches are proud of us and want us to keep working,” Smith said.

New Hanover will continue its run in the 3A Playoffs Tuesday at Buck Hardee Field against Southeast Guilford.

Carson edges A.C. Reynolds 2-1, advances to third round

CHINA GROVE — Carson’s baseball team played another round of Rock-Paper-Scissors to see who gets to play the hero on Friday night.

This time it was junior infielder Zeb Burns who delivered the decisive hit as the Cougars edged visiting A.C. Reynolds, 2-1, in the second round of the 3A state playoffs.

“It was my time,” Burns said after top-seeded Carson (25-2) earned a berth in Tuesday’s third round against Southwest Guilford. “Last game it was Logan Rogers. The one before it was Luke Barringer and Cole Hales. It’ll be someone else’s turn next time.”

Carson has won four straight games and 14 of its last 15, largely because head coach Chris Cauble has so many weapons on his bench. Burns, a .359 hitter who bats fifth, served a run-scoring single into left-center field with two out in the bottom of the fifth inning — making a winning pitcher of long-limbed right-hander Deacon Wike.

“Zeb is one of the guys we want at the plate in big situations,” Cauble said. “One-through-nine, everybody’s come up big at some point during the season. Everybody’s not hitting for a high batting average, but it’s somebody different every night.”

Burns struggled in his first two appearances against right-hander Parker Kanupp, a five-game winner with a sub-2.00 ERA coming in. He stranded three baserunners when he looked at a called third strike in the last of the first, though the Cougars took a 1-0 lead when teammate Jake Harris was hit by a pitch with two away. Then in third, with runners at the corners and nobody out, he harmlessly fouled out to third-baseman Dane Frellick.

“There was a lot on my shoulders the next time up,” said Burns, who punched a 1-2 fastball over the infield. “With two outs and two strikes, I was just trying to put the ball in play. I was thinking fastball all the way because (Kanupp) hadn’t thrown me one all night and didn’t throw many in the game.”

Barringer, who had drawn a one-out walk, scored his second run of the game. “Both of their runs were scored by guys who walked,” said first-year Reynolds coach David Williams. “We gave up too many free baserunners.”

Williams described Burns’ game-winning hit as a near-miss. “It was a pitch that caught just enough of the strike zone,” he said. “That’s gonna score runs all night. Give the hitter credit. Big teams make big plays in big situations.”

Make sure Wike’s name is on that list. The East Rowan transfer allowed one run on six hits in 6 2/3 innings and won his eighth decision. He reached his pitch-count threshold after fanning Blake Stotesbury and Jalen Crowder to open the top of seventh.

“I was able to locate and get a lot of called strikes,” Wike said, moments after retiring seven of the last eight batters he faced. “So much has to do with Garrett (Alewine) behind the plate. He’s got every tool you could ask for. He blocks everything and can frame pitches for the umpire. It’s great to have him back there.”

Alewine, Carson’s durable senior catcher, went 2-for-3 and helped Wike through some precarious moments. Reynolds put its first two batters aboard in the top of the first before Rogers charged from first base to glove Alex Flinn’s foul bunt attempt. Then cleanup hitter Brandon Snyder bounced into an inning-ending double play.

“It took a little time, but (Wike) got into a nice rhythm,” Alewine said. “I think he found himself. In a way, he seemed more relaxed than composed. But it all goes back to him locating very well.”

Wike said the double play “got me out of a lot of trouble and swung the momentum early.” An inning later, with a 1-0 lead in his back pocket, he sailed into another squall. Reynolds put two runners on with one down — but failed to capitalize when Barringer ran down Frellick’s line drive to the gap in left-center and Wike whiffed Stotesbury on a sweeping, 2-2 curveball off the outside edge.

Reynolds tied the score in the top of the fifth, when Kanupp and Frellick coaxed walks and Stotesbury reached on a bunt single. Cooper Ingle’s one-out flare single to right plated the run. That set the stage for Burns and Wike to shine.

“It’s probably the biggest game Wike’s pitched in to date,” said Cauble. “Ever since that game at East (5-3 loss on March 29), he’s been money every time he’s pitched. Tonight, he came out and did beyond what I thought he’d do. That was an awesome pitching performance by Deacon.”

It took a spectacular two-pitch relief effort by Aaron Misenheimer to secure Carson’s win. With the potential tying run on second and two out in the Reynolds seventh, the junior fireman relieved Rogers and fired a pair of called strikes past Flinn to end it.

“We had the right guys in the right spots,” Alewine concluded. “At the end of the day, it’s a team win and we’re in the third round.”

NOTES: Wike’s ERA dipped to 1.47. He struck out seven and walked three and threw first-pitch strikes to 18 of 28 batters. … Barringer leads the team with 32 runs scored. Burns now has 20 RBIs, second on the team. … Eighth-seeded Southwest Guilford (20-7) advanced with a 5-3 second-round win against T.C. Roberson. The Cowboys have won six of their last seven games.

A.C. Reynolds 000 010 0 — 1 6 1

Carson 100 010 x — 2 5 0

WP — Wike (8-1). LP — Kanupp (5-2). Save — Misenheimer (1).

Leading hitters — A.C. Reynolds: Ingle 2-for-3, RBI; Kanupp 1-for-1, double, run scored. Carson: Alewine 2-for-3; Burns 1-for-3, RBI; Barringer 2 runs scored.

  1. Johnny Fever was playing the outfield while sitting in a lounge chair on defense and he got a hit or two at the plate….

Venus Flytrap looked like Tim Raines or the other old Montreal Expos’ outfielder Ellis Valentine…Venus was great in the outfield and he covered all kinds of ground, rooming from left to right…

Herb Tarleck was the catcher for WKRP, they had Andy Travis at third base, Bailey was playing at second and Jenifer was in center field, but she spent most of her time standing near the mound and as Mr. Carlson/”The Big Guy”/Moose pitched, Jenifer would distract all of the WPIG batters standing there in her real short, red shorts….(By the way, Herb was a pretty decent hitter.)

Jenifer was a key to the game and she really got the attention of the opposing WPIG players, and it sure hurt WPIG, as they lost their focus…

Les Nessman started out pitching, then moved to third base and then over to first base and Les finally ended up in right field….Andy and Bailey kept telling Les that Pete Rose played a lot of different positions for the Cincinnati Reds…

WKRP had their radio station engineer and I think his name was CJ and he hit the snot out of the ball, but he was drunk by the third inning and was having trouble standing up….

Quite the game as WKRP defeated WPIG, 10-9, in the radio station softball game…

This sort of reminded me of our radio station basketball game from several years back…

I was in charge of getting up the team for WKEW radio and other than our sports shows, we had a fairly older listening audience during the day….My stuff was the sports shows stuff, so we ran crazy at night….

Crime Stoppers had this charity basketball tournament and they asked if I would get up a team and I said sure, why not…

We got Fred Whitfield current President of the Charlotte Hornets, Randy Doss, who at the time was a VP in admissions at Guilford College, and he’s now at Greensboro Day…We had one guy I found that played college ball at Cleveland State, we got this guy named Robert Jones, who played some at UNCG, his wife at the time, Janet Jones worked at the WKEW station, I found this guy named Earl, a student at N.C. A&T and he was sort like finding the guy from “Cornbread, Earl and Me”…(Earl’s girlfriend Vicky Rodriguez worked at the station so Earl was legit.)

You had all of those guys and me and another player or two and we just destroyed WFMY TV 2 in Game One, and in the finals, we fell to 102 JAMZ, by a two or three points….

Earl threw down a dunk on 102 JAMZ that Steve Harvey is still talking about….We put little WKEW 1400 on the map for that night…

Boy the memories of all of the games from over the years…I guess that is why I can’t put this stuff down….

    When is the next game???

  2. Hey some of the losses from last night are still stinging but the next Round of the Playoffs is right in front of us…

It should be one heck of a ball game when Southeast Guilford travels to Wilmington on Tuesday night…

Should see Ryan Douglas for SEG vs. Blake Walston for New Hanover….Walston on the mound for New Hanover is (10-0) and has 105 K’s vs. 14 BB’s on the season…Walston led New Hanover to the 3-A State Baseball title last year(2018) and led the New Hanover football team to the 3-AA football title in 2017…

Both young men, Douglas and Walston outstanding pitchers and QB’s and should make for a great matchup…

SEG vs. Wilmington New Hanover, with Douglas(SEG) going up against Walston(NH)…..

On another note, Venus Flytrap, from WKRP in Cincinnati, also reminds me of another former Cincinnati Red outfielder and that would be Bobby Tolan….Bobby Tolan was tall and lean and he could roam that Reds’ outfield, just like Venus Flytrap was doing in that softball game last night…
