FINAL:Post 53 Greensboro Red Wings 8, Kernersville 7
A go-ahead 2-RBI double by Cody Donnell in the 6th and 2 scoreless innings from Zach Ross sealed the comeback for Post 53.
The Red Wings have the day off tomorrow and will travel to Davidson County on Thursday.

Despite a rough fourth inning, Post 53 remained largely in control of tonight’s win against Kernersville Post 36. Big hits early and late carried the offense while pitching shut the door in the final frames.
As was the case in the previous two games, the first inning tonight was slightly unnerving. Jack Ratliff started on the mound and walked the leadoff batter. After getting a ground out by the next batter, he walked the three-hole hitter to put runners on first and second with one out.
Ratliff battled and struck out the cleanup hitter on a full count. As the batter walked back to the dugout, he walked across the plate and catcher Justin Brady drew an interference call by attempting to throw out a runner in a double steal. The heads-up play ended the inning and gave the Red Wings some momentum offensively.
The Red Wings started and ended very well at the plate. Three pitches into the inning, Alden Kolessar hit a lead-off triple and scored on an RBI single by Cam Edmonds. Three batters later, Edmonds scored on another triple by Adam Weber that also brought in Jonathan Todd. A sacrifice fly by Brandon Leonard made the score 4-0 in the first inning.
In the second inning, a single by Jake Sindahl and a walk to Kolessar put two men on for Clay Dilday, who hit a 2-RBI doubled to left. After two innings, Greensboro led 6-0 and nearly ran away with the game.
Ratliff pitched a scoreless second frame but allowed one run in the third on an RBI single. He allowed another in the fourth off a leadoff home run and was responsible for one runner that scored on an error. Overall, he went 3.0+ innings and allowed three earned runs on four hits, two walks, and five strike outs.
With a 6-2 lead in the fourth inning, Todd relieved Ratliff and allowed a single and a walk before striking out two consecutive batters. The error allowed one run to score and led to back-to-back RBI singles; all three of those runs were unearned, but tied the game 6-6. Todd pitched the next inning as well where another unearned run on a ground ball to center field gave Post 36 a 7-6 lead.
The offense lulled for three innings as the Red Wings recorded only one hit from the third through fifth innings. They rallied in the sixth however as Zach Ross singled and advanced to second on a botched pickoff attempt. Justin Brady was hit by a pitch and Josh Nichols walked to load the bases for Cody Donnell.
Donnell ripped the second pitch of the at-bat into left-center field for a 2-RBI single. He advanced to second on the throw and gave Post 53 an 8-7 lead. Post 53 nearly got their ninth run on a sacrifice fly, but the Kernersville center fielder threw a dart to the plate before Nichols could score.
Ross entered the game to pitch the sixth inning, hoping to hold Post 36 in check and he did just that. Over two innings, Ross walked just one and struck out five without allowing a run or a hit. Ross earned the win on the mound as the Red Wings won their first game at home of the season.
The win pushes Post 53 to 2-1 on the young campaign. They will take their third such start in four years to Lexington on Thursday where they look to improve to 3-1, which would be the program’s best start in their brief history. First pitch is set for 7:00 PM at Holt Moffitt Stadium.

Scott Davis has stepped down at the head baseball coach at Wesleyan Christian Academy in High Point….

After 17 seasons and 337 victories, Scott Davis has decided to step down as Wesleyan baseball coach the school announced today.
Davis’ Trojans teams won five state championships and 14 conference championships, and he was named conference coach of the year nine times. He also helped develop a number of future professional baseball players, including San Diego Padres star Wil Myers.

Wilmington New Hanover shut out DH Conley, 5-0, to take game one of the best-of-three series behind a no-hitter from NC State commit Blake Walston.
Walston went seven innings and struck out nine Viking’s batters in the game.
(Blake Walston is the same guy who shut down the Southeast Guilford Falcons last Tuesday night….And I hope this kid makes it to N.C. State…He led his New Hanover Wildcat football team to the 3-AA football title in 2017, and also led the New Hanover baseball team to the 3-A Title last season….The kid can “do it”, and if he doesn’t end up going straight to the pros, in the June MLB Draft, hopefully, he will be in Raleigh at N.C. State, this Fall…..++++++++++
