Friday Night Finish:We had some close games Tonight and GreensboroSports.com was on Top of them All

Good close ball games with our GreensboroSports.com/GreensboroSports Radio crew on the scene this evening, as we had our Murphy Wainer Orthopedic Game of the Week with Smith hosting Northeast Guilford, and that ends with NEG on top, 14-6…

Wyatt Smith was at Northwest Guilford-Western Guilford, and that game closes out with NWG taking it home, at home, 34-26 over the Western Guilford Hornets….Wyatt Smith with more on this game later on tonight…

J.D. Wagner was at Marion Kirby Stadium, where the Northern Guilford Nighthawks came in to “The Kirb”, and left Page with a stunning 16-14 victory over Page….More from D.J. on the way, so stay stuck to this site, for the rest of your night…

Our other reporter Dennis Williamson brought us reports on Dudley at Ragsdale and Dennis let us know the Panthers are back, as Dudley made it a long night for the Tigers, Dudley 48, Ragsdale 12….Saw a lot of Manny Elliot at QB for Dudley tonight, and I wonder if that is the same Manny Elliot that was over at Northern Guilford Middle a few years back…The kid could play some middle school basketball, he was a star in the making back then…
**********Mekhi Wall, from Dudley HS, named the Friday Night Rivalries Player of the Game, coming in from Walter Johnson and team, at Friday Night Rivalries….**********
+++++ Player of the Game stats for Mekhi Wall, with 5 rec. 138 yards; 2 TDS/90 yard punt return for TD….+++++

We also gained another key spotter/reporter tonight, as Jerry Stafford was sending us score updates all night long, from the Grimsley-Asheboro game…Jerry Stafford hit us with that final, Grimsley 47-12 tonight, over the Asheboro Blue Comets…Jerry Stafford tells us that Grimsley is the team to beat this year, and the Whirlies are about to make some noise in Guilford County…Quan Nora and Chris Zellous both sharp again tonight for the Whirlies…

But back to our theme of the night, the close ball games for the GreensboroSports.com coverage teams…

Northeast Guilford 14, Smith 6…Smith scored early and was working on the upset until the NEG Rams got their game rolling…Smith was up 6-0 early on an interception/pick six by Xavier Garner…
Northern Guilford 16, Page 14…Page was predicted to win this game and many thought the Page Pirates would run away with this game, seeing that Northern got mashed at Grimsley last week, 34-0…What a difference a week can make…Hearing Page QB Javondre Paige had to leave the game in the first half, due to a concussion…That is not good news for Page…
(from D.J. Wagner, Javondre Paige, was 1-5 for 5 yards on the night, after throwing/passing for 352 yards and 4 TD’s a week ago.)
Northwest Guilford 34-26….Western got a shutout last Friday, but it was far from a shutout for WG tonight, but you have to give the Hornets credit, they stayed with the NWG Vikings and missed the chance to take down the Vikings at Billings Stadium, as the game was decided by just one TD and a two-point conversion….Player of the Game was Carson Cassetty, with three TD runs for the NWG Vikings…Cassetty with 26 carries for 154 yards and three touchdowns…

At Claude Manzi Stadium, on the Ben L. Smith High School campus, on a night when the Golden Eagles of Ben L. Smith were honoring the 1963 Golden Eagles football team, Smith gave Northeast Guilford fits early in this game..Xavier Garner with that Pick Six for Smith, and all of sudden, Ben L. Smith is leading the game 6-0….

But Northeast Guilford was not done…Very impressed with the NEG offense led by quarterback Clayton Patterson, who doubles as an outside linebacker for NEG….The Rams’ Tre’von Hester ran the ball 21 times for 109 hard-earned yards, while RB Kobe Perez added 22 yards, on 6 carries for NEG…NEG QB Clayton Patterson was 7-11 in passing, for 57 yards, with 2 TD’s and one interception….Zeke Nicholson grabbed 5 of those 7 Patterson passes and Zeke put his name in for “Player of the Week”, after he turned two of his receptions into touchdowns…Northeast Guilford ended up with 224 total yards on the evening…Stats are coming courtesy of our broadcast associate Don Tilley, and his Tilley Talley and Tilley Totals…Nicholson would also win the Jaylen Gavin “Fearless Punt Return Man” award, as Zeke was looking strong, not weak, on his returns tonight…He did not shy away from any footballs that were coming his way on punts tonight….

For Smith, it was tough sledding most of the night on offense, but the Eagles Nkosi Alston produced 84 total yards with 47 yards on 11 carries and Alston added 37 yards on three receptions…Smith was able to get 83 yards in the air from senior QB Jordan Williams, and Williams went 8-14 for the night, with no interceptions….Smith also got some key running yards from RB Shamed Gibbs and WR turned RB, Andre Neely….Xavier Garner, Jarvis Maness, Javonta Farmer and Neely were bringing in passes from Smith’s Williams..

Player of the Game tonight at Smith ends up with Tre’von Hester and Zeke Nicholson sharing the honors…

On the defensive side of things at Smith, we saw Tazhaun Davis, Emarion Lynch, Eric Summers, Josh Presna and Nigel Moffit-Shabazz making key defensive plays for Ben L. Smith….

For NEG on “D” some of the names that were called out included Joseph Waters, Anthony Hairston, Chantz James, Carlos Thorpe and Art Lawrence…NEG had their “D” in the right spots at the right times, and that gave NEG a huge chance to win, and the NEG took over and won this football game…Several of those Rams were working hard on both the offensive and defensive lines…….

A few Friday Night Finish points on some other games that got our attention were the winning totals for Southeast Guilford, Eastern Guilford and Southern Guilford all three of those teams are in the Mid-Piedmont 3-A Conference…SEG, EG and SG scoring 33, 48 and 39 points…The result that creates the most stir for me is that 39-6 victory by Southern Guilford, at Providence Grove…

Where did all of that scoring come from by Southern Guilford???

And the Storm defense played like giants as well….

We will details and more highlights on these games in our “Saturday Morning Rewind” segment…
