Elon WSOC Phoenix Outlasts Charleston To Win Third Game In Four Outings

ELON, N.C. – Elon University women’s soccer moved to 10-3-2 overall and 4-1-1 in conference play after defeating Charleston 2-1 on Thursday, Oct. 17.

FINAL RESULTS

The win was the fourth CAA victory of the season for the Phoenix, while its two goals scored helped them maintain the conference lead in goals (36) and goal differential (+15) this season.

HIGHLIGHTS
Charleston jumped out to an early lead, scoring the game’s opening goal in the 1st minute of action. The goal was credited to Hannah Farmer while Olivia Freitas earned the assist.

Elon’s defense took control of the game from there, holding the Cougars scoreless for the remainder of the half. The Phoenix’s efforts kept the score within striking distance at 1-0.

In the waning moments of the first half, Carson Jones found some space just inside of the 18-yard box and fired a rocket past Charleston’s keeper. Her shot found the upper right 90 of the goal and knotted things up at 1-1 heading into the break.

Both defenses led the way for most of the second half, with neither side surrendering a goal from the 45th through 84th minutes. Their play kept the score tied at 1-1 until late in the game.

Hannah Doherty scored her first goal of the season in the 84th minute to give Elon its first lead of the game. The goal came on a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box that shot past the Charleston defense and into the bottom left corner of the net.

The Phoenix defense did their part to secure the win, keeping the Cougars from scoring the equalizer in the final sixth minutes of action.

Katrin Hauksdottir picked up her ninth win in goal for the Phoenix, making three saves on the day.
