Elon WSOC Phoenix Defeats JMU For First Time, Clinches CAA Tournament Berth

ELON, N.C. – Elon University women’s soccer moved to 11-3-2 overall and 5-1-1 in conference play after defeating JMU 3-1 on Sunday, Oct. 20. It was the first time in program history the Phoenix has defeated JMU.

The win was also the fifth CAA victory of the season for the Phoenix and clinched a berth into the upcoming CAA Tournament. Elon’s three goals scored helped them maintain the conference lead in goals (39) and goal differential (+16) this season.

HIGHLIGHTS
JMU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute when Hannah Coulling snuck past the Phoenix’s defense and attempted a shot that was just out of Elon’s reach. The goal put the Dukes on top early in the first half.

Jessica Carrieri knotted things up at 1-1 with her equalizer in the 34th minute. Her shot came from just inside the box after she wiggled her way past a few Duke defenders and fired a rocket across her body that found the back of the net. The goal marked her eighth of the season and tied the game just past the halfway point in the opening half.

Elon took its first lead of the game in the 40th minute when Kayla Hodges found some space in the box and converted a goal to put the Phoenix on top 2-1. The chance came off a beautiful cross from Hannah Doherty on a corner kick before Hodges controlled the ball and fired a shot past JMU’s keeper and into the left side of the net.

The Phoenix extended its lead to 3-1 just before the break when Carson Jones scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season. The attempt came off a free kick from Hannah Doherty that forced a save by JMU keeper Hannah McShea. From there, Jones played the ball perfectly and headed the rebound into goal.

JMU trimmed the Phoenix lead to 3-2 in the 52nd minute when Ginger Deel scored for the Dukes off a free kick into the box.

The Phoenix defense did their part to secure the win, keeping the Cougars from scoring the equalizer in the final 38 minutes of action.

Katrin Hauksdottir picked up her tenth win in goal for the Phoenix, making two saves on the day.
