RALEIGH – The 14th-ranked NC State women’s basketball team (1-0) claimed a comfortable victory in its season opener Wednesday evening inside Reynolds Coliseum, defeating the North Carolina A&T Aggies by a final score of 80-44. The win was NC State’s 17th consecutive season-opening victory.

The Wolfpack showed off the talent of its strong new signing class, as two of the three leading scorers were first-year players. Freshman Jada Boyd led all players with 18 points on 5-of-7 shooting and 11 rebounds for a debut double-double. Junior Kayla Jones and freshman Jakia Brown-Turner both added 14 points for the Wolfpack on an evening when NC State shot 28-of-63 (44.4 percent) from the field.

All 18 of Boyd’s points came in the second half. In the third and fourth quarters, she shot 5-of-5 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line.

“Coming into the game, I was really nervous,” Boyd said in the post game press conference. “I tried to get my jitters out in the first half, as you all could see. But I came into the second half feeling pretty confident. During halftime, Coach Moore told me to go in and play my game, so that’s what I did.”

Leading the Aggies in scoring, Deja Winters contributed 17 points and shot 7-of-17. Teammate Alexus Lessears led all players with 12 rebounds on an evening when the Aggies claimed 45 total rebounds but were held to a 16-of-63 (25.4 percent) success rate from the field.

NC State never trailed on Wednesday evening, leading for 39:03 of the game’s 40 minutes. All 11 Wolfpack players who took the court scored at least two points. The Wolfpack forced the Aggies into 26 turnovers and generated 30 points from the miscues. NC State also outscored N.C. A&T 32-14 in the paint and 18-2 on the fast break.
