  1. Andy, It is my favorite time of year & I haven’t seen anything about the local HS hoops offering for this season. Who are the top area teams and players to see in boys and girls high school basketball? I see games are happening but the newspapers are not covering them. So where can I go to see some good HS hoops this season?

  2. Tonight check out Northwest Guilford at Southwest Guilford….NWG is going to be a very strong boys team with Dean Reiber, Christian Hampton, Brandon Thomas, Robbie Boulton, Landry Garris and all five of those guys started last year….They have Khari Carson and Shaq Marsh in reserve and both of them can start if need be…NWG has a kid coming off of the bench and playing guard, Jackson Hartzell, and he is the son of Scott Hartzell, one of the top point guards in UNCG men’s basketball history…And there is Jake Kawalec and Conner Ballou, who both got some key minutes for NWG last year….The NWG boys are loaded and they won the HAECO last season and they could well be the #1 seed going into the HAECO this December…..

Going to be very hard for the other Metro teams to keep up with the NWG boys, unless they are having an OFF night….

Page has some talent, with Jaden Ellis and others and the new Page boys coach, Evan Fancourt will make them a much better team in time…He has the ability to make some magical things happen, when he gets all of the pieces of the team together that he needs…

Grimsley has Coach Corbett back and the Whirlies should be an outstanding defensive team…..Ahmil Flowers has already committed to High Point I believe, and he will be the top scorer for Grimsley….Grimsley will be able to go very tall along the front line, with Travis Shaw at 6’6 and Lawson Albright at 6’5 when they get those two back from football…Tyler Albright and Jordan Wall give Grimsley two guards from the old Kiser team that went Unbeaten a couple of years ago…Ross Kreager, Luke Jenkins and Ronan Martinek-Jenne are other experienced Whirlie players…

Ragsdale will not have Devan Boykin if he leaves early for N.C. State for football and HP Central will not have 6’8 Kuluel Mading, he is now at The Burlington School…He was the tallest and leanest player in the conference…

Southwest Guilford will be still be tough even though the Langley Twins and many others are gone….New coach Greg Vlazny is going to do a fine job running that SWG program and they have Bryce Causey and Miles Taylor leading them early on….Smith is very solid with McMullen, Silas Mason, Hines, Jordan Williams and more….Smith should be the early favorite in the Piedmont Triad 3-A Conference….Dudley will be steady with Jeremiah Dickerson due to be their leader, but they will be missing Isaiah Staten-Ray, who went to the Burlington School….Mount Tabor is always going to be good in that conference as long as Andy Muse is still coaching, and he is still there…

Smith, Southwest Guilford and Dudley will all be strong in the Piedmont Triad 3-A Conference…

Eastern Guilford looks to be ready to have another good season in the Mid-Piedmont 3-A Conference, but Southern Guilford will still be good and Southeast Guilford will probably be struggling again this season…KD Dawkins and Kamelle Smith should be the top scorers over at Eastern Guilford…

Northern Guilford will be down some, and with the loss of head coach Bill Chambers, it will take some rebuilding…Carson Lomax, Rashawn Pleasant, Nolan Hodge, Jackson Helms and Sam Emerick will lead Northern Guilford…Northeast is working to get back to respectability and they are getting better on the boys side….

The Greensboro Day boys and girls are both very good and the boys are at (7-1) to start the season and the Bengal ladies sit at (9-0)….Cam Hayes, Carson McCorkle and others will be the top talents on the boy’s team at GDS and I am looking for Jackson Noble to start adding in some key depth over there too….

For the GDS girls and these three can play for just about any team around, in Je’Bria Fullwood, Caroline Wyrick and Kate Jones…They are as good as any of the kids we see in the county…More from the Lady Bengals and they do have Hailey Blackwell back this season….PG, Hailey Blackwell, Junior, was PTAC Player of the Year as a Sophomore last year, All-Conference every year and Team MVP.
New-comers:Paula Graichen, 6 foot guard who can dribble and shoot, Drew Alexander, Spot Shooter, Ashana Robinson, crafty lefty…..

Ragsdale girls and Southeast Guilford girls are the tops in the county and it will be hard to crack and top what they can do….SEG is your 3-A Defending State Champion and with Kennedi Simmons and Raven Preston, those two are about as close as you can get to All-State players…Both are going to be there at the end of the season….If they improve and get better than they were last year, LOOK OUT!!!!!…Senior Nyah Stallings leading Ragsdale too…

With the Ragsdale girls you have Diamond Monroe and Moriah Frazier and there are more that are very good, but those two really stand out….Monroe and Frazier remind you of Earl “The Pearl” Monroe and Walt “Clyde” Frazier in a female version…Monroe was injured part of last year, but she has been working hard to get back to her old form, and has really been working on her ball-handling….Monroe has committed to the Elon Phoenix….

The Northwest Guilford girls will also be another team to beat…Although, I have the feeling the Ragsdale girls will get the #1 seed for the HAECO, and my feeling is the NWG boys get the #1 seed for the HAECO…NWG girls with Reagan Kargo, Thalia Carter, Megan Harkey, and those three are your team captains, Jayden Murray is a strong inside player to go with Harkey, plus you have Shaena Riddles, Kamryn Pegram, Hannah Parker, Madison Young, Brooke Anthony, Hannah Baker and Anniston Greene all giving you depth at guard…I will say one thing for NWG, they are very deep….

HAECO top three for boys should be #1 Northwest Guilford, #2 Greensboro Day School and #3 Smith High School…Girls HAECO Top Three should be, #1 Ragsdale, #2 Northwest Guilford and #3 Greensboro Day School and GDS might edge out NWG for #2, but you still have to give the edge to NWG, due to their depth…NWG can almost put three different teams on the floor and they have the bus load of depth at a guard…

Northern Guilford girls lost a lot again, plus they lost assistant coach Hayley Hackett to Northwest Guilford and you have Northern at Northwest Guilford this Friday night, but NG still has Janelle Henderson and Jayla Harris they are your team leaders and the newcomer, freshman Jadyn Newsome, has led the team in scoring at 13.0 ppg for the first two games of the new season…..Milan Gordon also strong at small forward…NG should still contend for the Mid-State 3-A title….

Dudley girls have begun the season at (0-3) and we have to remember how they finished the season last year, very strong…SWG has some talent with the Slade sisters and Tiir Nyok…WG still on the rebound and is making some small steps toward improvement…

Like we talked about above, SEG will be the team in the Mid-Piedmont 3-A and beyond…Southern Guilford is better and Eastern Guilford will still be good…

High Point Andrews has a very tough and strong 2-A team, and they have a very good chance to win their conference and advance deep in the 2-A Playoffs…

If we left your team out, we will be talking about you in the near future….

That gives you a good preview of what to expect this season and the GDS boys will contend, the NWG boys are ready to go places, the SEG and Ragsdale girls are State Title contenders, plus NWG can also give it a good ride in the girls 4-A….

You got your money’s worth here, and when we get on this subject of local high school basketball, we always have trouble finding a stopping point….

Now we have to go read about the Ron Rivera firing…Sad end to his career with the Carolina Panthers…Wonder who the interim coach will be(for the rest of the season), and without having looked in advance, I wonder if it will be Norv Turner….

  3. Andy, one of the Captains on the girls’ Ragsdale team has made the 4A-Metro All-Conference team every year, and the HAECO All Team last year. She’s also committed to a D1 school.

  4. Yes, I will put the shoe on my foot and wear it on this one…Got a couple of quick Ragsdale names up there that I have known from the past, all the way back to when they were playing Middle School ball here in the county…

I should have made my MaxPreps visit sooner for Ragsdale. They do have some key seniors and one of those is Nyah Stallings, who has busted her tail for this program since day one, when she joined the team…

Nyah is a true senior leader and sorry on my part for leaving her out of our original listings…Leaving her out is like leaving John Boy Walton off of Walton’s Mountain and The Walton’s TV Show…Like leaving Fred Sanford off of Sanford and Son, like taking away Gladys Knight and leaving her out of the Pips…

No more stalling, Nyah Stallings does big things for the Ragsdale Tigers and I am also excited to see what Larry Ogunjobi’s sister, Faith Ogunjobi, does for the Ragsdale Tigers, as a sophomore post player….

Going to be a busy season….

  5. Guilford County is loaded on boys side Smith one of the favorites to win States this year in 3A. I do think them and Mt Tabor will battle for conference title but Smith is long and added a few kids a freshman in Kobe George and a transfer from Ohio I believe. Smith is huge though it’s going to be hard to compete with that size all game long in the triad area and not to many teams in the state with that size. I predicting that they win Haeco this year. If haven’t seen Nick McMullen in a while you will be surprised looks like he has been eating weights much bigger and stronger than last year. Smith will go as far as he takes them. You have to add they have a very good coaching staff as well this may be their year.

Northwest will be good again this year Hampton and Dean are the ones everyone talks about but Brandon Thomas will be key to their run. I think they can make a deep playoff run but 4a in the state will be hard to win with North Meck and Raleigh Millbrook looking like the cream of the crop.

Page is Jaden Ellis team and he has improved since last year. They have added two transfers one kid left Eastern Guilford and another one from VA and add Jason Sellars they will give Grimsley and Northwest a test in conference. Add one heck of a coach they have a chance to sneak up on someone they did beat Smith last year and this years version of Page is a little better.

Grimsely will go as far as Ahmil takes them super athletic wing who jumper has improved. Losing Devin Resper will hurt because of his toughness and defense shooting ability. If they can get a steady hand at the PG position they will progress through the season and Travis Shaw crazy as it sounds probably is their best PG and best passer.

Eastern Guilford I think will be better than last year’s version. They have tough task this week against NW tonight and Smith tomorrow. As a team they are fast and everyone buys in as a team no egos and they defend. Kadyn Dawkins team leading scorer had big games last year 39 in one game 30 in another and a couple more 20 point games has come back better than last year and now he is the lead pg. Kamel Smith teams 2nd leading scorer is back and is one of the most athletic kids in triad is bigger and more explosive than last year. Omarion Johnson should lead team in rebounds pushing for double double status. They also added a guard who transferred in that will cause some issues on the defensive end and in transition.

Southwest is a lot better than I thought they would be had a rough out last night but losing all they had from last year I thought they would be in the bottom half of teams in Guilford County and I was wrong on that take. Bryce Causey finally is getting his chance to shine and he is showing that he is one of the better players in the area.

Dudley loss a lot also Big Tyler is a prep school Ray transferred out and some graduated. They still bring back Jeremiah, Darian Wynn and Ayden Gamble. With a bigger role for Frank Stockton this Dudley team will be different looks like defense is their calling card. Let me not forget Coleman long wing who is picking up college interest and just got an offer from DCCC not long ago is the team leader and primed for a big year.

High Point Andrews looks to be improved brought in a new coach who went and played at Andrews looks to have brought in good energy and the kids are feeding off of that. Should have a better record and will compete with Randleman for the conference title I’m giving the slight edge to Randleman right now.

Northeast Guilford they look like they will finish with the same or close to the same record they had last year.

Southern Guilford from Maxpreps they look to be competing really well they loss so much last year with players and coaching staff didn’t think they would be playing as well as they are.

Western Guilford I don’t know much about them last few years they haven’t been playing well I heard they added a new coach so looks like new energy they do have a bright future some of their best talent is the younger kids. Zavier Neely 6’4 freshman is a kid who people will hear about a lot more this year for them.

High Point Central & Southeast Guilford going to be a long season for them both HPC football team went 0-11 and right now I’m not sure how many the basketball team will win and Southeast haven’t been in a game all year so far.

Girls Ragsdale 3 headed monster Nyah, Mariah and Diamond I think are the team to beat in Guilford County wish we could get them and Southeast in a game with each other that would be a good one.

Greensboro Day we all know what they are about nothing changes year in and year our they are one of the best teams in the state.
Piedmont Classical another talented team full of kids with offers.
HPCA KJ Garrett and Landon Sutton will take them as far as they can.
Wesleyan another talented team with a Jr PG who just picked up and offer from NC A&T.

Side note Dudley and Page will be a good one tonight think I will check that one out and also Eastern Guilford traveling to NW.

  6. Do you all cover T. Wingate Andrews Girls Basketball? What are the predictions for them?

  7. Andrews girls (2-1) to start the season…Lost by 18 to Ragsdale and that is about right…Ragsdale is a bear to beat….Andrews with HP Central tomorrow night/Friday and Andrews should win that game by 30 points….Andrews will contend for the Conference Title and the Johnson kid is one we know and she will do will do well…Andrews with Coach John Shearin will contend and go far on the 2-A level….Very competitive program for girls basketball….
