Elon’s Barthelmes & Throwers Shine at JDL Early Bird Invite

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Elon University women’s track and field team opened its 2019-20 indoor season with an impressive showing from its throwers as the Phoenix competed at the JDL Early Bird Invitational on Sunday, Dec. 8, inside the JDL Fast Track facility. The Phoenix throwing group picked up two event wins at the meet including a new school-record in the weight throw for senior Skylar Barthelmes.

MEET RESULTS

Barthelmes broke her own school-record in the weight throw with a new personal-record toss of 55′ 9.25″ (17.00m) to take the event win. Sophomore Kristine Strazdite won the shot put with the Valmiera, Latvia, native throwing a personal-record mark of 44′ 10.75 (13.68m). Barthelmes also qualified for the ECAC Indoor Championships with her throw while Strazdite was just shy of qualifying by .02 meters.

Charlotte Bradsher was third in the weight throw as she tied her personal-record mark of 53′ 4.25″ (16.26m). Barthelmes and Lauryn Carlton finished in the top-five of the shot put with Carlton garnering a third-place standing with her heave of 42′ 2″ (12.85) while Barthelmes was fourth at 41′ 8″ (12.70m).

In the women’s 400-meters, freshman Aliya Barrows was the runner-up with a time of 58.52. She also led the Phoenix in the 200-meters with a time of 26.57, good for fifth overall. Another rookie, Madison George, was fourth overall in the pole vault with a cleared height of 11′ 5.75″ (3.50m), tying for the second-best mark in school history.

The Phoenix will be idle for over a month before continuing its indoor season with a return trip back to the JDL Fast Track for the JDL January College Kickoff Classic on Jan. 17-18.
