High School Basketball Tonight(1/3/2020) Finals:No more Golden Corral on Lawndale Drive(Closed on Wednesday/Gone for Good)

Our high school basketball scoreboard is on the way, but first we bring you a local restaurant update…We have seen several leave us recently, and now we can add another to the Greensboro Restaurants that have closed list…
**********If you are hungry for a full meal on Lawndale Drive, one of those buffet meals that won’t leave hungry, you can no longer count on the Golden Corral on Lawndale Drive…First it was Steak n Shake on Lawndale Drive gone, then we saw the Your House on Battleground Avenue shut their doors forever, and now the Golden Corral on Lawndale Drive is gone for good…**********
The official/unofficial announcement:The Lawndale location closed Wednesday according to the News & Record. They could not meet new franchise requirements – the Wendover location was recently remodeled to meet the requirements. Lawndale location did not have the space required

Now that we have your attention and we have some of you mad with stomachs a growling, here are your Friday night high school basketball scores…..

Page boys 76, Southwest Guilford 59
Page(9-6)/SWG(7-6)
Southwest Guilford girls 67, Page 22
SWG(9-5)/Page(2-11)
SWG Cowgirls offense goes 23-58 from the field and that includes 6-20 shooting from three-point range….SWG Cowgirls defense allows only 4 points in the second quarter and just 2 points allowed by the Cowgirls in the 4th and final quarter…See game report here at the site for more info on this game/contest….Most coaches at any school will take the offensive and defensive output that the SWG Cowgirls were showing in the game at Page, tonight…The Page Pirates are showing improvement…It is a big help to have Reagan Maynard back on board and helping the offense get the basketball across half court…Kira Lineberry had a beautiful blocked shot on defense and the Pirates overall, are starting to rebound the ball better…The Pirates have to find a better way to hang on to the ball, once they get their hands on it…SWG’s Tira Nycok and Jocelyn Faust would both be members of their All-Conference team, if we voted tonight, and maybe they could land spots on the All-County/All-Area team…

Page boys vs. Southwest Guilford…Final:Page 76, Southwest Guilford 59
End of 1st Q:Page 19, Southwest Guilford 7…Halftime:Page 32, SWG 29…End of 3rd Q:Page 55, SWG 45…Coming out of halftime and working in the third quarter, Page had an 8-0 run going, as Page went from all tied up at 39-39, to Page in front, 47-39…

Page was getting steals, made layups, and then the run goes to a 10-0 Pirates’ run, then it was up to a 11-0, then a 13-0 Page run and then SWG was finally able to put a stop to that Page Pirates’ 13-0 run…

Lots of after Christmas turnovers in this game, but I can say this, Page got a huge spark from Tyler McIntyre off of the Pirates bench and Page got a big/huge dunk from Jason Sellars…

Jaden Ellis was his usual self with some break-down dribble-penetration and cross-over cutter dribbling can break down the defense and get Ellis all the way to the basket in just a few quick dribble-cutting move…One of the better slices/slashers in the county and he/Ellis does a very good job of using that dribble to break down his opponent, and to get himself to basket…He will lose the ball occasionally and sometimes the shot doesn’t fall, but at least 93% of the time, Jaden Ellis is putting his team in position to score, and to the team totals…..

Jeremy Mull and Bryce Causey have been sensational for Southwest Guilford all season long, and tonight was no exception, as Mull and Casusey did all that they could do to keep the SWG Cowboys in this game…Solid effort from Miles Taylor and others from “The Ranch”, as well…
++++++++++Top Scorers from Page:Jason Sellars 21 points, Zion Connor 16 points, Jaden Ellis 11 points, Jonathan Campbell 10 points…..Top scorers from the Southwest Guilford Cowboys:Bryce Causey 21 points, Jeremy Mull 17 points, Miles Taylor 9 points…..++++++++++

Thalia Carter (NW Guilford) 2020
One of the more competitive players on court two today, TC has a next level gear that saw her blow by defenders with ease. She can really set the tempo and her hard nose defense almost lead a late charge. She can help a programs culture ASAP.

@MathurineAgency on Reagan Kargo (NW Guilford) 2020
-although her second half wasn’t as strong shooting wise, she showed a good feel for scoring and displayed it on all 3 levels. She also showed her physicality fighting on the glass coming away wit 9 rebs to go with 23 points. Fearless

High Point Andrews girls 64, High Point Central 21

  1. I was driving past the Golden Corral on Tuesday night/New Years Eve and it was around 10 or 11 o’clock at night and the parking lot was full of cars and I thought they were having a New Years Eve Party/Buffet going on inside/in there in the Golden Corral on Lawndale Drive..

It must have been a going away party instead…
(The next night I drove by the Golden Corral, and this time it was before 9pm, the place was totally dark.)

Golden Corral on Lawndale gone and I will remember our good friend Jeff Summey, who used to be the manager there at the Golden Corral on Lawndale, and Jeff used to give us Golden Corral gift cards, and we give them away on our 12 Days of Christmas, from the Golden Corral…

We also had Orlando, the most recent Golden Corral on Lawndale manager, and he would give us a nice discount on our Christmas Meals/Luncheon at the Golden Corral on Lawndale…Thank-you Mr. Orlando…We were just in there for our Christmas meal 2 weeks ago, with Dennis White, Don Moore and Don Tilley…Great meals, great deals at the Golden Corral on Lawndale…

I still remember back in the late 90’s when David Graziano was the manager at the Golden Corral on Lawndale and he helped us out on gift card meals for our high school coaches each week…Those free meals were real good for the coaches…

We had $10.00 gift books we would give out to our Players of the Week, courtesy of Steve Warren and Jane Warren at Steak n Shake/Gateway Management and then we had the free meal gift cards for the coaches…

A free buffet will go a long way on a hungry day and those Steak n Shake gift books would give you a great meal for $10.00 and I used to try and stretch mine out and make two meals out of one of those Steak n Shake gift books from Steve and Jane Warren and Gateway Management..

Another memory was when David Graziano and Golden Corral gave away a $1,000.00 scholarship to one of our top players of the year from Guilford County…We had this criteria sheet that allowed all of the coaches to give us input and in the end, Will Berry, back then the quarterback for the Northwest Guilford Vikings, he was the winner and I am pretty sure continued his education at UNC/North Carolina…

Some good memories from the Golden Corral on Lawndale and now like a lot of our other favorite places from over the years, the Golden Corral on Lawndale is now only a memory and another part of GreensboroSports history….

If any of you have any Golden Corral memories to share with us, drop them in here….Those were the GOLDEN YEARS/GOLDEN CORRAL YEARS…

Give us a few of those memories and don’t waste them all over on Facebook…..

  2. And about the closing of the Lawndale Drive location of the Golden Corral, coming in from the Carl Wilson article/post at http://www.greensboro.com:

“It’s not financial,” said David Gronewoller, president and CEO of GC Partners Inc., which operates nine Golden Corral restaurants in three states, including the two in Greensboro.

“We’ve looked for three years in that submarket for a piece of real estate. Nothing came open that was a size we needed to do what we did at Wendover,” Gronewoller said.

Gronewoller said he continues to work with Golden Corral to open a new franchise in north Greensboro.

“It’ll be good when we get there because it will be the latest and greatest,” he said.
