GREENSBORO, N.C. – Frank Maldonado has stepped down as Greensboro College’s head baseball coach to join the Tampa Bay Rays minor-league staff, acting Director of Athletics Dr. Robin Daniel announced Tuesday.

“I am happy for Coach Maldonado to receive a well-deserved opportunity and sad to see him leave,” Daniel said. “He has established a solid program, supported his colleagues, and brought a winning attitude to every practice, game, meeting, and relationship. He will be missed.”

Maldonado took over the Pride baseball team in December 2015 and quickly developed the program into a conference threat. Following a 10-win season his first year, Maldonado led his team to an appearance in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinals in 2017 and finished the season with a 23-20 mark.

In 2019, Maldonado’s team posted another 20-win season and advanced to the USA South Conference Tournament Championship series for just the third time in the program’s history.

In addition to the overall team performance, Maldonado was credited with coaching four All-Conference selections and one ABCA All-South Region selection, while also setting three single-season program records.

“It is with a heavy heart that I am departing Greensboro College. I can’t thank the players and coaching staff enough for buying into our vision, and putting forth the effort, energy and passion daily,” Maldonado said. “The culture of the program is strong, and I am confident that Interim Head Coach Avery, Matt, Enad and Blake will continue to build on the success that has been created over the past four seasons.”

“I have been very fortunate to meet and develop lifelong friendships with so many wonderful people at GC, and for that I will be forever grateful. I wish our players, the athletic department, and Greensboro College nothing but success moving forward. Go, Pride!”

With Maldonado’s departure, Assistant Coach Avery Booker has been named interim head coach, while Matt Reed has been elevated to associate head coach.
