Elon Football’s Liggs, Jones Earn Phil Steele All-America Honors

ELON, N.C. – Elon University football student-athletes Greg Liggs, Jr. and Tre’Von Jones were each named Phil Steele FCS All-Americans this week with Liggs earning First Team honors and Jones picking up Fourth Team Freshman honors.

Liggs, a First Team All-CAA Football pick and a Buck Buchanan Award finalist, led the nation with eight interceptions this season and also contributed 49 total tackles and five pass breakups. He recorded three interceptions in two separate games and had seven pick-offs in three October games. At season’s end, his eight interceptions set a new Division I program record at Elon and his 15 career interceptions did the same.

This marks Liggs’ sixth All-America award of the 2019 offseason. He also named a First Team STATS FCS Football All-America selection, First Team Associated Press All-American, First Team AFCA All-American, First Team Walter Camp FCS All-American and a First Team HERO Sports All-American.

Jones burst onto the scene in Elon’s defensive backfield in 2019, playing in 10 of 11 games while finishing with the fourth-most tackles on the team with 57. Along the way, he had 41 solo stops and 1.5 tackles for loss, four pass breakups and an interception. During the year, he had a season-best 16 stops with a forced fumble against No. 2 James Madison and recorded his lone interception of the year in the finale at No. 19 Towson.

With the 2020 football schedule announced in November, Elon will next be back on the field Sept. 5 for a road matchup against The Citadel. Next season, Elon will open with two on the road at The Citadel and Duke (Sept. 12) before playing at Rhodes Stadium on Sept. 19 against Campbell. For the full schedule, click here.
