Peaks Jr. & Brown Both Post 20-Point Performances In Conference Victory Over Piedmont

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Greensboro College men’s basketball team held off the Lions of Piedmont College Saturday for a 94-85 USA South Athletic Conference victory.

Greensboro held a 5-2 lead three minutes into the first half before Piedmont mounted a 9-0 run over the next 2:40 to take a 11-5 lead with 14:43 showing on the clock.

Despite trailing by the six-point margin, the Pride quickly got the offense going over the next five minutes as they mounted a 20-4 run to take a 25-15 lead, while connected on eight of their 14 shots during the stretch. Matthew Brown, who finished with a double double of 22 points and 10 rebounds, fueled the run with 10 points while Michael Phifer and Keyshawn Dorsey both had three points.

Greensboro was then able to maintain their lead for the remainder of the half as Erick Peaks Jr. hit a pair of free throws as time expired to make the score 43-32 at the break.

Over the first four minutes of the second half, the Pride was able to extend their lead to as many as 15 points before taking their largest lead of the contest at 79-61 with just over six minutes remaining.

However, Piedmont did not go away as they pulled back to within nine before the Greensboro defense shut the door to secure the nine-point victory.

Peak Jr. finished with a game-leading 25 points to go along with four rebounds and three steals. Brown added six blocks to his double double performance while Keyford Langley(Southwest Guilford High School) finished with 15 points, five rebounds, and five assists.
