College Athletics News – Dr. Sharon Beverly Named Guilford College Interim Athletics Director

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College President Jane K. Fernandes, Ph.D., appointed Sharon Beverly, Ph.D., as the College’s interim director of athletics Tuesday.

Dr. Beverly comes to Guilford with more than 30 years of higher education leadership experience in academic affairs, student affairs, and athletics at both private and public institutions. She enjoyed a successful 20-year career as a head women’s basketball coach at three different institutions, including 11 seasons at NCAA Division I-member Fairleigh Dickinson University, where she was inducted into the school’s athletics hall of fame.

From 2002-14, Beverly served as the director of athletics and physical education at Vassar College, where also chaired the school’s physical education department. Following her term at Vassar, she filled dual roles as assistant vice president for student affairs and executive director of athletics and recreation at the College of New Jersey. Since 2013, she has held a variety of teaching roles at Concordia University of Chicago, Rutgers University, and Immaculata University.

“Dr. Beverly is ideally suited to lead us through an important transition as we work to position our athletics program for new heights of distinction in the 2020s,” Fernandes said. “Her savvy leadership will tremendously benefit all of our coaches, staff and student-athletes as we navigate vastly complex challenges and build a strong bridge to the future.”

Named one of the “30 Leading Women in Higher Education” by Diverse Magazine, Dr. Beverly received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Queens (N.Y.) College and earned her doctorate of philosophy from Capella University.

“I’m excited to join a great team at Guilford College,” Dr. Beverly said. “The Quakers have a rich tradition of success in NCAA Division III athletics. Many challenges and opportunities are in front of us. I am confident we will make great strides in the months ahead as we work to build something truly special here.”

Dr. Beverly’s appointment begins immediately. She will oversee the Quakers’ 22 women’s and men’s varsity teams through at least August 2020.
