Elon Track and Field Closes Out Stay at Liberty Kickoff

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Sophomore Kristine Strazdite became the latest athlete from the Elon University women’s track and field team to qualify for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor Championships as the Phoenix concluded its stay at the Liberty Kickoff on Saturday, Jan. 25, inside the Liberty Indoor Complex.

RESULTS

Strazdite qualified for the ECACs in the shot put as the Phoenix ended the two-day meet with three event qualifiers for the postseason. Elon has seven athletes and its 4×800-meter relay team qualified for the ECAC Indoor Championships in March.

The Rundown
Strazdite threw a new personal-record in the shot put with her toss of 13.78m She would finish fifth overall in the event. Teammate Skylar Barthelmes finished in the top-10 of the shot put with her throw of 12.91m.

In the long jump, senior Melody Burke set a new personal-record with her leap of 5.70m – just .10m shy of the qualifying mark for the ECACs. She finished third overall in the event. Alex Tudor joined Burke in the top-10 of the event with her mark of 5.50m.

The Phoenix also earned a win in the 1,000-meters on the final day at the Liberty Kickoff. Anna Twomey came across the line first with her time of 3:02.98 and was followed by teammate Ashley Irby, who was second with a time of 3:03.35. In the 500-meter run, Gabriela Varisco de Oliveira set a new personal-record with her time of 1:18.51 and was fifth overall. Hannah Miller was Elon’s top runner in the one-mile run with her seventh-place standing and time of 5:20.18

Moira O’Malley was third overall in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.65m. Burke was eighth overall in the event with her cleared height of 1.60m.

Elon is scheduled to return next weekend, Jan. 31-Feb. 1, to Lynchburg, Va., for the Liberty Flames Invite.
