College Baseball Final – Guilford 4, Brevard 3:Quakers’ Tanner Hobbs(Northeast Guilford HS) among the team leaders with his work on the mound

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Dylan Tuttle had two hits and scored a run in Guilford College’s 4-3 baseball win over visiting Brevard College Sunday at McBane Field. The Quakers (3-1) took advantage of seven Tornados’ errors and a passed ball to clinch the three-game weekend series with two wins after the teams split a Saturday doubleheader.

Five different Guilford pitchers scattered seven hits and two earned runs. Sophomore starter Drew Sawyer threw three shutout innings in his first college start. Joey Hegeman (1-0) tossed the fifth and sixth frames to earn the victory and Tanner Hobbs(Northeast Guilford High School) fanned three in the final two innings to earn a save.

The Tornados’ (1-5) shoddy defense allowed the Quakers to take a 4-0 lead after four innings. Tuttle scored on a first-inning passed ball to start the scoring. Brett Shapcott delivered an RBI single in the third that doubled the host’s advantage. Back-to-back Brevard errors in the fourth inning allowed two runs to score.

Brevard came back against Hegeman with an unearned run in the fifth and RBI hits by JJ Wilkes and Jack Atkinson (game-high 3 hits) in the sixth. The Tornados got runners on second and third in the seventh before Dylan King fanned Wilkes to end the threat. Hobbs worked around a one-out walk in the eighth and a two-out single in the ninth for his second college save.
