Elon Softball Caps Perfect Weekend Versus Morgan State

ELON, N.C. – Behind home runs from freshman Carley Davis and sophomore Megan White and a career-high tying eight strikeouts for Kenna Quinn, the Elon University softball team concluded a perfect weekend with a 7-0 victory over Morgan State in the finale at the Phoenix Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 16, at Hunt Softball Park.

BOX SCORE

The Phoenix (7-1) went 4-0 at its second home tournament of the season, concluding an eight-game homestand to start the year. Morgan State fell to 0-4.

At the Plate: Elon tallied nine hits in the contest with four players having multi-hit games. Davis had her best outing of her rookie season at the plate, going 2-of-4 with a home run and four RBI. White was 2-of-3 with two RBI and a home run while Megan Grant and Claudia Penny also added a pair of hits.

In the Circle: Quinn (4-0) received the win in the circle after pitching 5.0 innings in relief and walked just one batter while matching her career and season-high with eight strikeouts. Katie Hoover started the contest for the Phoenix and pitched 2.0 innings and gave up two hits with a walk.

The Rundown
Hoover and the Phoenix had to work out of a jam in the top of the first. Morgan State’s Aliya Ewell reached on a fielder’s choice before she moved to third on a double by Haylee Bobos to give the Bears runners in scoring position with one out. Elon induced the next two outs on a fly out and a foul out to get out of the frame unharmed.

Elon’s offense was quiet for the first two frames, but came alive in the bottom of the third. The Phoenix loaded the bases with no outs after Rebecca Murray received a free pass. After a popup on the next at bat, White drove in the first run of the game on a bloop single to shallow left, scoring a run from third. Another popup threatened to leave the bags full for Elon as Davis came to the plate. The Bridgewater, Va., native worked a 3-1 count before crushing her first career home run over the fence in left field to put the Phoenix ahead 5-0.

The Phoenix added two more runs in its home half of the fifth. White took a one-out, 1-0 offering to left field for her third round tripper of the season as the solo shot put the score at 6-0. Elon eventually loaded the bases once again with two outs after an error on the shortstop before Allie Eith made the score 7-0 after drawing a walk.

Quinn held Morgan State’s offense in check for the remainder of the game and ended the contest retiring the final 12 batters she faced while not allowing a hit in relief.
