Elon Softball Phoenix Falls in Midweek Matchup at NC State

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University softball team saw its six-game win streak snapped at NC State on Wednesday, Feb. 19, as the Wolfpack defeated the Phoenix, 12-4, at Dail Softball Stadium.

Box Score

In its first true road game of the season, Elon (7-2) could not overcome four home runs from the Wolfpack (6-4) in the contest as the Phoenix fell to 9-13 all-time in the series against its in-state foe.

At the Plate: The Phoenix registered only four hits in the game with each of those provided by four different players. Megan White added her fourth home run of the season in her lone at bat of the contest while Rebecca Murray also added an RBI and a double while going 1-of-3. Ally Repko also drove in a run for Elon.

In the Circle: Freshman Kaitlin King (3-2) took the loss for Elon in the circle. The Parkland, Fla., native allowed 13 hits and 10 earned runs in 5.0 innings while making her third career start. She also struck out two batters.

The Rundown
NC State jumped out early on the Phoenix with a five-run bottom of the first. The Wolfpack had two runners reach on a leadoff single and a walk before a three-run home run from Logan Morris put them up 3-0. Elon would record an out, but saw another runner reach on a single before NC State’s second home run of the inning off the bat of Randi Farricker put the maroon and gold in a 5-0 deficit.

The Phoenix responded to get on the scoreboard in its half of the second frame. White led off with a home run that put the Phoenix down four, 5-1.

The Wolfpack answered with a two-spot in its home half of the second. NC State opened with its third home run of the game as the inning began with a solo shot by April Visser. Another run scored off a grounder to second as NC State went up 7-1.

Elon came back with a three-run top of the sixth to get back within reach of the Wolfpack. With a runner on first and one out, Megan Grant singled to give the Phoenix two on before Murray drove in a run on an RBI double to left. A wild pitch allowed Grant to cross the dish with Murray advancing to third before Murray also scored on a RBI from a Repko groundout. That made the score 8-4 in favor of the Wolfpack as the Phoenix looked to regain momentum.

It would be short lived as NC State quickly had its first two runners reach in the bottom of the sixth before an Elon miscue allowed one of them to score to make it a five-run game, 9-4. After another single gave the Wolfpack two runners on base, NC State connected on its fourth homer of the contest, a three-run blast to conclude the contest with a 12-4 victory.

On Deck
Elon continues its road trip with a visit to Columbia, S.C., for the Gamecock Invitational this weekend, Feb. 21-23. The Phoenix opens the tournament on Friday versus Iowa State at 12:30 p.m.
