Timely Run Helps No. 22 Virginia Tech Double Elon WLAX 14-7

ELON, N.C. – Powered by a 7-1 run by the opponent between the first and second halves, Elon University women’s lacrosse dropped a 14-7 contest Saturday, Feb. 22, at Rudd Field to the No. 22 Virginia Tech Hokies.

THE RUNDOWN
A game of runs in the first half, Elon tied the Hokies at four with 6:19 to go in the first half before Virginia Tech scored twice in the final 62 seconds of the half to take momentum into the locker room. Out of halftime, the Hokies scored five of the game’s first six goals to take control at 11-5 with 18:33 to go.

In the first half, the Phoenix answered Virginia Tech’s game-opening goal with Hannah McCarthy and Cami Lynch getting on the board to go up 2-1 with 21:46 left. Following a 3-0 Hokie run, Lynch and Cate Mackel brought the Phoenix back even at four before the Hokie run to take control.

HIGHLIGHTS
Lynch, Mackel and Cassidy Creighton led the Phoenix with two goals apiece with McCarthy’s lone goal rounding out the scoring. Six of Elon’s seven goals were assisted on the day with McCarthy posting three assists to help power the Elon goal scorers. Campbell Armstrong and Gillian Curran each picked up three draw controls with Creighton leading the squad with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Virginia Tech was paced by Paige Petty’s five goals and four draw controls. Four other Hokies each tallied twice with Taylor Caskey adding three assists for five points. Emma Crooks closed with three ground balls and four draw controls and Mary Clare McCarthy caused five turnovers.

NOTES
-Though falling 14-7, the two teams were evenly matched in the draw circle with Virginia Tech taking a slim 12-10 advantage.
-Both teams struggled keeping the ball with Elon turning the ball over 16 times and Virginia Tech 13.

Elon will return to action with its third-straight game at home to start the season on Saturday, Feb. 29, when it hosts Davidson at 1 p.m. at Rudd Field.
