College Baseball Final: Greensboro 11, Guilford 7

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Michael Garvey had a single to score two runners to key a five-run fifth inning as visiting Greensboro College defeated Guilford College, 11-7, on Sunday at McBane Field. The Pride trailed 6-5 heading to the fifth inning.

Greensboro moved to 5-3. The Quakers dropped to 3-3. With the win, the Pride won the cross-town rivalry three-game series. The final matchup is March 25 at First National Bank Field, home of the Greensboro Grasshoppers.

The Pride had 13 hits to the Quakers’ 12. Guilford took a 6-5 lead after tallying three times in the fourth. Ellis Stokes singled in Brandon Ussrey for the first run. Anthony Cuozzi followed with a
single to bring home Isaiah Hairston. Stokes, who was 3-of-5 with two runs and two RBI, then stole third base and came around on a throwing error by pitcher Clayton Slater.

Chenzo Scanio (1-1), the third of four Pride hurlers, earned the win for the visitors. He tossed 2/3 innings and was the pitcher of record when GC plated its five runs in the fifth. Max Castro, who came in after 3 1/3 innings from Quaker starter Ty Walser, suffered the loss. He dropped to 0-1 after allowing three runs in his two innings of work.

Ussrey, Ryan Hill and Dylan Tuttle all collected two hits apiece for the home team. Both of Hill’s hits were doubles.

For Greensboro, Garvey was one of four hitters to have two base hits. Devin Bracking hit a three-run home run for the Pride in the fourth frame.

The Quakers host Methodist University on Wednesday (2/26). The first pitch is 2:30 p.m.
