College Women’s Lacrosse Final: Guilford 21, Sewanee 9

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Three Quakers netted a team-leading four goals each as Guilford defeated The University of the South, 21-9, Sunday afternoon at Appenzeller Field. With the win, Guilford is 3-0 on the season which is the best start to a campaign since 2010.

Sewanee (3-1) started the scoring 26 seconds into the contest but the Quakers responded with consecutive tallies from Reagan Bednar, Abigail Horchar, Nia Gill to gain the advantage.

The Tigers tied up the contest at 3-3 before Guilford went on another three-goal run to regain the lead.

Both teams traded goals as the half went on, however, the Quakers netted three more tallies in a row to go up 12-7 at the end of the first frame.

In the second half, Guilford dominated offensively as it outscored the Tigers, 9-2, to secure the 21-9 victory and remain undefeated on the season.

Offensively, Gill, Horchar, and Alli Earwood tallied four goals apiece. Madison Iandoli finished the contest with a game-high seven points on three scores and four assists to go with 11 draw controls. Gill led the team in both ground balls (4) and caused turnovers (2). In net, Kersten Daneau made 10 saves in 60 minutes of work.

Sewanee was led by Hattie Fogarty with five goals and one assist for six points. Sarah Strand contributed three tallies and one assist. Defensively, Preston Cooper grabbed five ground balls and caused two turnovers.

Amanda Jenkins earned the start in goal and made three saves in the first half. Caroline Roncalli and Molly Morris both saw time in the second half and made two and one saves, respectively.

Coach Charlotte Dixon-Graves’ Quakers travel to N.C. Wesleyan College for a 4 p.m. nonconference contest Wednesday (2/26).
