College Women’s Basketball Final: Guilford 84, Washington and Lee 77 (ODAC Quarterfinal)

SALEM, Va. – Taylor Casey led all scorers with 29 points but it wasn’t enough for second-seeded Washington and Lee University as seventh-seeded Guilford College defeated the Generals, 84-77, in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament quarterfinal round Thursday evening.

The Quakers won the tip and got on the board first with a three-pointer from sophomore Lindsay Gauldin. Guilford then went on a 6-0 run to take a 9-0 advantage before Washington and Lee were able to find the basket.

A layup by Miracle Walters closed out the first quarter and gave the Quakers a 15-10 edge at the end of the frame. Guilford held Washington and Lee to 21.4 percent shooting from the floor in the first 10 minutes of play.

The Generals mounted a rally in the second quarter, coming within two points of the lead three times but Guilford ultimately headed into halftime up 37-30.

Both teams continued to battle through the third and fourth quarters with two ties and four lead changes in a game that would come down to the wire.

Casey drained her seventh three-pointer of the night with 31 seconds remaining in regulation to bring the Generals within one point of the lead.

Guilford took advantage of the bonus however and saw two free throws from Carisma Lynn and four free throws from Walters in the closing seconds to secure the 84-77 victory.

Offensively the Quakers saw double-digit scoring efforts from five different players. Gauldin led the way with 24 points, while Walters finished with 18 points and Lynn, Kristen Roberts, and Calyn Davis all chipped in 11 points. On the boards, both Lynn and Monell Dunlap pulled down seven rebounds apiece.

Guilford’s 84 points mark the second-highest point total it’s scored in an ODAC Tournament game as the Quakers scored 86 points in a 2016 quarterfinal win over Randolph-Macon.

For the Generals, Erin Hughes and Megan Horn netted 17 and 16 points, respectively. Horn also added a game-high nine assists and Jordan Diehl led all players on the glass with nine rebounds.

Coach Stephanie Flamini’s Quakers advance to Saturday’s (2/29) ODAC Tournament semifinals and will face the winner of the quarterfinal contest between Roanoke College and Bridgewater College. This will be the Quakers’ 17th trip to the ODAC Tournament semifinals and their first since 2017.
