High Point Women’s Track Lead After Day One of Big South Indoor Championship

BLACKSBURG, Va.- High Point University women’s track and field completed day one of the Big South Indoor Track and Field Championship. The day was filled with highs and success as the Panthers broke three school records on Friday (Feb 28.). After day one High Point is in first place with 60 points, Campbell is second with 54 points, and Hampton is third with 47.5 points. Alicia Dawson, Zoe Geis, and Anika Weisbrod were all crowned as Big South Individual champions.

“We had a really good day, but it’s just one day this is a marathon tomorrow is a very big day,” Coach Mike Esposito said. “We could not have done better with advancing people through, it puts us in a position to score in everything tomorrow. We got some big events coming for us I’m really excited. I loved the way our kids competed today, I absolutely loved it was impressive to watch them compete.”

Dawson had a school record-breaking performance that clinched first place in the Long jump. Dawson finished with a mark of 5.97m. The freshman won her first Big South individual championship in her career.

Kaley Rammelsberg finished third in the women’s high jump after clearing a bar of 1.63. It is the freshman’s first Big South Championship podium finish.

Geis won the 5000m with a time of 17:00.65 in a spirited effort. Tessa Webb finished third in the 5000m with a time of 17:26.26.

Weisbrod won the pentathlon in dramatic fashion with 3497 points. 19 points were the difference, the second-place competitor from Charleston Southern finished with 3478. Weisbrod’s 3497 points broke her own school record from last year’s Big South Conference Championship. Madison Reynolds placed fourth in the pentathlon as she finished with 3347 points.

Nyile Facey won her heat in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.51 she qualified for the 60m hurdles finals. Her time of 8.51 set a new school record. She will be back in action again tomorrow. Taylor Arthur qualified for the 400m dash tomorrow with a time of 57.11. Leah Bolden competed in the 60m dash and in the 200m she qualified for the finals in both events. Bolden finished fifth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.61. Bolden finished sixth in the 200 meters with a time of 24.88.

Camryn Harper won the 800 meters with a time of 2:15.80 qualifying for the 800 finals tomorrow. Qualifying alongside her was Olive Allen and Franzi Jakobs.

The Panthers will be back in action tomorrow as they are seeking their first Big South championship.
