College Baseball Final: Penn State Abington 17, Guilford 3

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Ryan McCarty went 3-for-4 with a home run, and was the winning pitcher, as Penn State Abington defeated Guilford College, 17-3, on Sunday at McBane Field.

The Nittany Lions, after drooping to the first two games of the series, prevented a series sweep and moved to 3-3. The Quakers dropped to 5-5 on the season.

Guilford opened the game’s scoring with two runs in the second inning. Brett Shapcott led off the frame with a double and was brought home with a two-base hit by Austin Bailey. Bailey later scored on an error and was 2-of-3 to lead Quaker hitters.

The Lions scored four runs, and brought nine batters to the plate, in both the third and fifth innings. PSUA, which outhit Guilford 18-6, tallied five times in the ninth inning.

GC scored its final run in the eighth inning. Anthony Cuozzi singled and touched home plate after an RBI groundout from Ryan Hill.

McCarty (1-0) pitched seven innings, allowed two runs (one earned) and four Guilford hits. Six Quakers took the mound for the home team. Freshman Isaiah Hairston (0-1) started, tossed 2 1/3 innings and suffered the loss for GC. He gave up three earned runs, three hits and three walks.

Demetrius DeRamus had four hits top Nittany Lion batters. Both Zach Morales and Sean Doherty contributed three base hits in the win

The Quakers play William Peace University at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, N.C. on Wednesday (3/4). Game time is 6 p.m.
